"Power and subtlety for this racy red Lirage!"

"Attractive nose with clear notes of herbs and sap, underpinned by fresh red fruit. Smoky, ashy herbal notes come through on the palate, balancing well with sweet redcurrant and cherry fruit. A lovely sense of freshness and a striking, structured finish. Impressive." (Jancis Robinson 2024)

Bettane & Desseauve

Rated estate (2022 guide) 3 stars (High-quality production, serving as a benchmark in its sector)

About the estate:

The estate is unique in that it is the only one to extend over both the Tavel and Lirac appellations, covering 65 hectares. Its rounded pebbles on the surface and sandy-clay subsoil produce fairly fresh wines, as the vines suffer less from the heat than in other areas. Tavel contains eight of the nine grape varieties authorized in the appellation, and is a source of pride for the Bez family, who manage this magnificent estate with discretion and wisdom. Tavel contains eight of the nine grape varieties authorized in the appellation, and is one of the prides of the Bez family, who manage this magnificent estate with discretion and wisdom. With its reasonable prices, it is a model for the region. The wines here show tremendous aging potential and develop admirably in complexity, as regularly proven by vertical tastings.

Wine rated (2024 guide) 93/100

About wine:

It is distinctly herbaceous, with notes of blackcurrant leaves accompanying blackberry and blackcurrant fruit. Powerful, concentrated, and fresh, it has lovely acidity, pleasantly fresh tannins, and a long finish. It is impressive for an unoaked Lirac, demonstrating the quality of the vineyard. Certified High Environmental Value.

Hachette Wine Guide

Guide Hachette des vins

Rated estate (2022 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer's wines are regularly recognized by the guide)

About the estate:

In 1919, Jean Olivier acquired the former estate of the Counts of Aqueria, dominated by an 18th-century château and adorned with a French-style park. His son-in-law Paul de Bez completely restructured the vineyard: today, it covers 64 hectares in a single block, managed since 1984 by his grandsons Vincent and Bruno, now joined by Raphaël, the fourth generation. A sure bet for Lirac and Tavel wines.

3-star estate (very high-quality production)

About the estate:

The Château d'Aqueria dates back to the 16th century. In 1920, it was acquired by Jean Olivier, who brought it to prominence. Vincent and Bruno de Bez now oversee the estate where they grew up, which covers no less than 66 hectares. Apart from Tavel, a renowned gastronomic rosé, the rest of the production, under the Lirac appellation (both red and white), is often interesting.

Note and opinion by Mr. GILLES D. Published on 05/18/2025

A few roasted and bitter chocolate notes left by oak aging can be found in the fleshy texture of this Lirac, which is otherwise bursting with stewed red fruits and enhanced by a touch of pepper. The massive and powerful structure is balanced by beautiful, consistent tannins that are still firm but not harsh, and by a dynamic freshness that lingers in a remarkable finish. With a good year's patient waiting, this wine can be enjoyed with a royal couscous or fine grilled beef cuts in summer, and a veal marengo sauté or hare stew in winter. Rating = 4.
