Bettane & Desseauve
Wine rated 89/ 100
Domain rated (guide 2021) 2*Stars (A serious and recommendable production, but a little more regular and homogeneous than the previous one)
About the wine:
Straightforward, still firm tannins but a lovely liquorice finish for this pleasant, ready wine.
About the domain :
Philippe Modat compensated for the ungratefulness of his job as a clerk at the Commercial Court by breathing new life into his wild gneiss lands in Caramany, with the help of his indefatigable steward Laurent Abet. Today, his sons Quentin and Louis have taken over, with many projects in mind. Irreproachable viticulture, respectful vinification, range building: everything is in place to help the estate grow and evolve. Promising wines, a cellar full of ideas, and a welcome wind of youth blowing through an appellation that needs it more than ever.
Guide Hachette des vins
Wine rated (guide 2021) 1*Star (Very successful wine)
Domain rated (guide 2021) Award-winning wines (The wines of this producer are regularly awarded by the guide)
About the wine:
Let's bet that in 1 or 2 years, this wine will be as well-balanced, round and pleasantly fruity as it is today. It's already at its best with grilled meats.
About the domain :
Of Catalan origin, Philippe Modat, a magistrate, is an enlightened wine enthusiast like his father, who also became a winemaker. In 2006, this passion led to the creation of an estate in the Agly valley: 27 ha of vines on a plateau 300 m above sea level, in organic conversion since 2011 (8 ha in biodynamic viticulture) and an ecologically designed cellar, equipped with photovoltaic cells, inaugurated in 2008.

About the wine:
A blend of 50% Carignan, 30% Syrah and 20% Grenache, the 2017 Côtes du Roussillon Villages Caramany Comme Avant has been aged in a mix of tank and barrel, with a tiny portion of new oak. It's ripe and darkly fruity, with blackberry and blueberry fruit accented by notes of dark chocolate, peppery spice and maybe even a little cedar. Full-bodied and intense, it's almost creamy on the palate, its flavors fading slowly on the long, supple finish. Drink over the next five years.

A nugget discovered at the end of 2022. Fresh attack and full, deep, spherical palate, around subtle aromas of great richness and intensity. The meticulous ageing is reflected in the almost jammy fruit, vanilla and herbaceous notes. The voluptuous, delicately velvety texture, with a hint of sweetness, sets the pace in rhythm with melted tannins of extreme finesse, ending with a long, lingering finish supported by sweet spices. A Haute Couture wine, with good drinkability despite its 15% content, at an affordable price. Ready to drink after aeration at 18°, it enhanced Lozère lamb mice with honey, thyme and rosemary, accompanied by candied baby carrots. Score = 4.3.
