"A dapper Mourvèdre!"

"It's rare to find a deep, concentrated Mourvèdre that has only been aged for a short time in tank, but the 2021 IGP Côtes Catalanes Carrement Mourv'Edre is quite simply a beast. Mint, garrigue, blueberries and cherries appear on the nose, while the medium- to full-bodied palate is silky, fine and elegant. It may even improve a little with short cellaring." Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

Domaine rated 1*Star (A serious, recommendable production, in line with what one has the right to expect from its appellation(s))

About the domain :

Founded in Vingrau in 2002 by Jacques Castany and Pascal Dieumidou, this estate found good advice right from the start from their neighbor Hervé Bizeul's oenologist (Clos des Fées). In 2004, its reputation took off thanks to Decanter magazine. However, the two are still part-time winemakers, despite their 10 hectares in production. The winery, housed in an old garage, remains simple but efficient. All the cuvées are very well made, making the domaine a sure bet in the Roussillon region.

About the domain :

Jacques Castany worked in transport and Pascal Dieunidou in IT. In 2002, they set up in viticulture in a tiny winery. With success, as their already brilliant track record testifies. The 10-hectare vineyard is located in Vingrau, facing an imposing limestone cirque.

Rated wine (guide 2022) 92/100

About the wine:

Slightly reductive, it becomes Mediterranean on the nose, full of thyme, rosemary herbs, black cherries and black earth. Medium to full-bodied, with round, caressing tannins. Creamy on the palate, with a savory, spicy mid-palate. For drinking or cellaring.

Another great success from Domaine de l'Edre, with this seductive concentrate of beautiful aromas from perfectly ripe Mourvédre, with its bright red fruits, combined with touches of sweet spices and hints of garrigue. Sun-drenched and full of energy, the wine unfurls a round, unctuous and delicious texture, enhanced by a fine mineral freshness and framed by full-bodied, yet soft and caressing tannins. Superb, silky, lingering aftertaste with a surplus of fine spices. Pure gourmandise with a Bandol touch, and at a very moderate price. Served in its youth to enjoy the fruit and to liven up an aperitif evening with Catalan chorizo tapas. One of the remaining bottles remains in the cellar for an old-fashioned rabbit stew next autumn. Score = 4.
