Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

Domain rated 2*Stars (A serious and recommendable production, but a little more regular and homogeneous than the previous one)

About the domain :

This 28-hectare estate has long been run by André and Michel. Michel's son Guillaume joined in 2009. The estate is located on the steep slopes of Torméry, south of Chignin. It was the grandfather who led its replanting in the 1950s. The estate avoids herbicides as much as possible, but cannot work all its plots by hand. Guillaume is trying his hand at organic farming on the two and a half hectares he took over to create the Côteau de Torméry estate. He is also experimenting with ageing in foudres or stoneware. A wide, coherent range with promising innovations.

About the domain :

Michel Quénard took over the family domaine, founded by his grandparents, in 1976. His son Guillaume joined him in 2009, after studying at the Lycée Viticole de Beaune and then at the Changins engineering school in Switzerland, and has since taken the helm of one of Savoie's most renowned estates, with a very consistent quality in both red and white wines.

The 2018 is a good wine, but disappointing compared to the 2015, which was exceptional. Inconsistent quality from bottle to bottle, unless it stores poorly. An almost undrinkable bottle due to dominant fermentation aromas.

On tasting a second bottle 9 months apart, the sharp, edgy tannins of Arbin 2018 have mellowed: the palate has gained in suppleness and the acidity is less aggressive. On the other hand, the ripeness of the fruit and the nuance of spicy aromas remain unchanged, contributing to a good overall balance. balance. Pleasant length, fresh and light. A score of 3.7 for this Mondeuse, designed for ageing, but lacking the finesse of Château De Mérande's La Belle Romaine. Friends enjoyed this wine served at 16° with crêpes des Alpages (Reblochon made with raw milk and 13-month matured Savoy ham), accompanied by a generous plate of Grisons meat.
