"Length and power

"Afraid of frost or hail? In any case, this cuvée refers to the nickname of the Madonna chapel overlooking the vineyard... With its great aromatic intensity, it's a relaxing wine. It evokes stewed fruit, cocoa and mocha. A beautiful marriage between wood and wine, which is confirmed on the palate with length and silkiness". (Le Guide Hachette 2024)

Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

Domaine rated 2*Stars (A serious and recommendable production, but a little more regular and homogeneous than the previous one)

About the domain :

Established for 5 generations on the most famous cru La Madone in Fleurie, the Després family produces a highly consistent range of elegant, well-balanced Fleuries. Jean-Pierre Després' son Arnaud created the Domaine du Niagara in 2005. This year, he is set to take over the family estate and manage the whole operation from now on. A tall order for a famous but difficult cru. The latest vintages live up to the estate's reputation, and the wide range of wines offers a risk-free choice at reasonable prices.

About the domain :

Established since 1984 with his wife Maryse, Jean-Marc Després, one of the leaders of the fleurie appellation, handed over his domaine in 2018 to his son Arnaud, who is now in charge of 18 ha close to an emblematic site of the appellation: the chapelle de la Madone. Other label: Dom. du Niagara.

Domaine noté (guide 2022) Sélectionné (We remind you that this guide is a prize list and as such, all the estates that appear in it, even without a star, represent, in our eyes, the excellence of French production).

About the wine:

This cuvée offers a depth and typicity singular to Fleurie's old vines, with black fruit, dry grass and pot pourri. The palate is rich, dictated by great length. The wine needs more time to fully express itself.

About the domain :

Jean-Marc Després is a discreet winemaker who speaks to you through his eyes... and through his wines! His son Arnaud joined him in 2005. He took over his great-grandfather's vineyards, which he distributes under the Domaine Niagara label, modified the way the vines are cultivated and planted new plots, including Viognier on granite. For the quality of its welcome, the straightforwardness of its wines and the delicacy of its inn, La Madone is a welcome stopover in Beaujolais.

Wine rated (guide 2023) 92/100

About the wine:

Fleurie Dame de la Pétoche 2020 presents a fragrant, floral bouquet of violet-infused black cherries, mingled with blueberry and blackcurrant. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins, deceptively mellow while structure lurks in the saline finish. This is an excellent Fleurie, but again, I'd keep it for three or four years.

Wine rated (guide 2023) 92/100

About the wine:

This unusual Fleurie is bursting with ripe, fresh black cherries with lovely flesh, but the lively acidity and fine, interlocking tannins make it feel lighter than it actually is (14.5% alcohol). Long finish with a touch of bitter chocolate. To drink or to keep.

An ode to delicacy and a hymn to gourmandise! Remaining within the medium-bodied, deliciously expressive framework, Dame Pétoche graces us with a remarkable Fleurie 2020, solar and perfectly profiled in a coulis of stewed fruit marrying tasty spicy and smoky notes. The juice is full-bodied and dense, and the acidity is discreet enough to add a touch of freshness. What's more, it has great scope and fullness thanks to the graceful, unctuous touch of its melted, elegant tannins. Nice sapidity on the finish, prolonging the suave, sensual side. Meticulous ageing guarantees incredible cellaring potential. A bargain at €15.50. A lot of charm and flavor to sublimate a beef sauté-sauce saté accompanied by fragrant white rice. Score ÷ 4.5.
