Expert opinion
Bettane & Desseauve
Rated 92/100
Domaine rated (guide 2023) 3*Stars (High-quality production that can serve as a benchmark in its sector)
About the wine:
A Gamay of great style, which develops into a velvety, pleasant palate with lovely fruit energy. Intensity, concentration and a certain originality in the final aroma. Superb and refined.
About the domain :
After graduating in viticulture and oenology, Jean-Marc Burgaud settled in Morgon on the Côte de Py in 1989. Today, he owns 17 hectares in four appellations, Beaujolais-Villages red and white, Régnié and Morgon, the latter representing 11.80 hectares. Jean-Marc Burgaud is a discreet winegrower, but just mention his name in the vineyard and you'll quickly realize that his reputation precedes him.

About the domain :
For several years running, I've noticed that Jean-Marc Burgaud is a winemaker at the top of his game, and his success in meeting the challenges of the 2021 vintage is just further proof of that. These are some of the most delicious wines produced in the region today, and they're all the better for Burgaud's decision to abandon new oak in favor of dry wood and pursue a gentler extraction than in the past, with his semi-classic - carbonic maceration lasting 7 to 15 days depending on the cuvée. And there is only one bottling of each wine, which gives a rare homogeneity, even for its 4.3 hectares in Beaujolais-Lantignié (one of the region's finest values, by the way).

Rated (guide 2023) 17.5/20 (Grand vin)
Domaine rated (guide 2023) 2*Stars (These great estates, often blessed with fabulous terroirs, are must-haves which, thanks to their consistency and the excellence of their production, must be included in the cellars of discerning wine lovers).
About the wine:
This selection of high-altitude Py vines stands out for its fresh ripeness and precise ageing. Dense and full-bodied on the palate, with justly extracted tannins. It should keep well.
About the domain :
Since the creation of his domaine in 1989, Jean-Marc Burgaud has become a firm fixture in our guide. From his apprenticeship in Burgundy, he has learned to work in cuvées parcellaires, to age the grapes over two winters, and to destem the grapes according to the year and the wine. His vinification always brings a velvety look to the Gamay, set by barrel ageing (very little new) adjusted to each climate (the majority being located on different Morgon terroirs). He also produces régnié and beaujolais-villages on the granite soils of Lantignié. The style has opened up over time, without losing sight of the expression of the place.

About the wine:
Great interplay of ripe blackberry and black cherry character with concentrated, fine tannins, a smoky note interwoven into this tapestry of beautiful darkness. Very long, precise finish with great berry sweetness wrapped around the tannic core. On aeration, a wonderful aroma of violets emerges. Drink now, but best from 2024.
