James Suckling
"What flavors!"
"A pink granite terroir, planted with 70-year-old vines, placed in the hands of a winemaker who has already amply proven himself. Add to this the excellent ripeness achieved in the 2020 vintage, and it's hardly surprising to find a full-bodied, long-lasting Moulin-à-vent. The whole reveals an aromatic profile dominated by black fruits. A bottle that augurs well for the future". (Le Guide Hachette 2024)

Expert opinion
Bettane & Desseauve
Domaine rated (2020 guide) 2*Stars (A serious and recommendable production, but a little more regular and homogeneous than the previous one)
About the domain :
Gilles Gelin is one of the young generation of Beaujolais winemakers who are producing a large volume of wines of impeccable quality. With the 2016 vintage, we identified an inflection in the style of the wines, more delicate, with a more accomplished aromatic precision. This style is confirmed in 2017. The wines are half-bodied, with just the right balance. Reliable and enjoyable. What more could you ask for?

About the wine:
A terroir of pink granite, planted with 70-year-old vines, placed in the hands of a winemaker who has already proved his worth. Add to this the excellent ripeness achieved in the 2020 vintage, and it's hardly surprising to find a moulin-à-vent that's full-bodied and long on the palate. The whole reveals an aromatic profile dominated by black fruits. A bottle that augurs well for the future.
Guide des Vins Gault & Millau
Estate rated 3*Stars (very good production)
About the domain :
Son and grandson of a winegrower, Gérard Gelin acquired Clos des Nugues in 1976, before going into partnership with his son Gilles. Located in northern Beaujolais, on the border of the Moulin-à-Vent, Fleurie and Morgon crus, the estate now covers almost 30 hectares. The average age of the vines is around 45 years, with some Gamay vines over a century old.

Domaine noté (guide 2020) Sélectionné (We remind you that this guide is a prize list and as such, all the estates that appear in it, even without a star, represent, in our eyes, the excellence of French production).
About the domain :
At the crossroads of the crus, the Gelin family produces mainly Beaujolais and Beaujolais-Villages. A few parcels in Morgon (1 hectare) and Fleurie (6 hectares) complete a range that goes from VDF to home-made crème de cassis. The wines resemble their maker, Gilles Gelin: rich in color with fruity tannin, they deliver over time. His white is a metronome chardonnay in Beaujolais-Villages, which he continues to plant on suitable soils. His gamay version demonstrates the excellence of the Lancié terroir when worked with adjusted yields.
James Suckling
Wine rated (guide 2023) 92/100
About the wine:
Ripe, earthy and fleshy, this Moulin-a-Vent is imposing and expressive, with plenty of healthy tannins balancing the richness of the body. The imposing, moderately dry and delicately balsamic finish completes the excellent picture. Long-lasting. To drink or to keep.
