"The freshness of a great terroir cultivated organically builds a vintage of sharp balance. Distinctive and refined, the nose conjures up spices, mocha, orchard flowers, black fruit and a touch of dried fruit. Classic, creamy tannins make this wine seductive, and the finish is precise, dynamic and perfectly balanced". (Guide Vert de La Revue du Vin de France Édition 2021)

Bettane & Desseauve

Domaine rated (2016 guide) 4*Stars (Top-quality producers, the glories of French winegrowing)

About the domain :

At the foot of the Saint-Émilion hillside, Canon-la-Gaffelière is the flagship estate of Stephan von Neipperg, who succeeded his father. This German aristocrat, himself an oenologist and agronomist with a degree from Montpellier and whose family owns extensive vineyards in Wurtenberg, has become one of the most dynamic and innovative winemakers in the Libourne region. Knowing how to play on both the power of the constitution and the finesse provided by the delicious Cabernet Franc from the pied de côte, he has restored full expression to the château's wines, which fully deserve their new status as premier grand cru classé.

Wine rated (2021 guide) 96/100

Domaine rated (2016 guide) 2*Stars (These great estates, often blessed with fabulous terroirs, are must-haves which, because of their consistency and the excellence of their production, must be included in the cellars of discerning wine lovers).

About the wine:

The freshness of a great terroir cultivated organically builds a vintage of fine balance. Distinctive and refined, the nose conjures up spices, mocha, orchard flowers, black fruit and a touch of dried fruit. Classic, creamy tannins make the wine seductive, and the finish is precise, dynamic and perfectly balanced.

About the domain :

In less than ten years, Stephan von Neiperg, with the help of Stéphane Derenoncourt, has restored the wine to its 1950s stature, incorporating all the advances of modern, well-managed oenology. Promoted to the rank of premier grand cru classé, certified organic in 2014 (an example that should leave a lasting impression), the estate is continuing its in-depth work based on a collection of Cabernet Franc massal selections and good rootstock choices, "with the aim of building a vineyard for the next fifty and sixty years". The warm, early-ripening soils of the hillside are ideally suited to these Cabernet Francs, which add finesse and nobility to the wine's tannic structure. The sacrifice of part of the volume explains the extraordinary concentration, but without artifice, of recent vintages.

Wine rated (2021 guide) 96/100

About the wine:

Fantastic depth and richness on the nose, with plums, mushrooms, bark and a touch of mahogany. On the palate, it's full-bodied, tight and precise, with very fine tannins and a long, creamy finish. Beauty, balance and clarity.

Wine rated (2021 guide) 96/100

About the wine:

A pure, open and seductive nose, slightly ashy, mineral, on blue fruits and pink berries, lively as a flirt. On the palate, it soars with strength and majesty, powerful as a knight, keeping its charm as intact as the nose foreshadowed. A wine with a limpid, airy texture, continuing on to a long, elegant, extremely refined finish. A great success.

Yves Beck

Wine rated (2020 guide) 96/100

About the wine:

Dense garnet-red. Youthful bouquet, marked by the freshness of red berries. With a little aeration, it reveals chalky notes as well as nuances of thyme and violets. Pleasant freshness on the attack. The wine has body, finesse and temperament. A kind of compromise between grandeur and tenacity, between fervor and elegance. A brilliantly precise wine.

Wine rated (2021 guide) 96/100

About the wine:

The blend of truffle, flowers, mint, red fruit, licorice and spices keeps you on the edge of your seat. But the highlight is the minerality: fresh, lively, silky, refined, waves of roasting, blackberry, red fruit and spice. Long, complex, spicy and vibrant, the fruit persists and develops on the palate from the middle to the finish.

Wine rated (2019 guide) 95-97/100

About the wine:

Blackcurrant, blackberry, hints of violet for a beautiful burst of ripe black fruit "al dente". Fleshy and juicy on the palate, with velvety tannins and an elegant black fruit freshness. The impression of biting into a grape. Firmer tannins on the finish for a full, velvety wine. A fine bottle.
