On the palate, the wines are tannic and powerful, with a certain roundness provided by Merlot, the main grape variety in the blend. The tannins, derived from its partner Cabernet Franc, are particularly pleasant. They are present, but very fine and coated. The Saint-Georges Saint-Emilion appellation is one of Saint-Emilion's "satellite" appellations, and owes its name to the Château Saint-Georges which dominates the vineyard. The Saint-Georges Saint-Emilion vineyard covers around 185 hectares, which is rather modest for the region, and is located in the northern extension of Saint-Emilion, on the right bank of the Barbanne river. The Saint-Georges-Saint-Emilion wine appellation is included in the Montagne vineyards, in the Montagne-Saint-Emilion appellation. Winegrowers have the choice of claiming either of these appellations. Production in this appellation is limited to around 8,800 hectolitres per year.
