Along with Grand Echezeaux,Echezeaux is one of the two Grand Cru appellations of the small village of Flagey-Echezeaux, granted in 1937. The appellation is part of the Côte de Nuits vineyards, lying on the plain between Vougeot and Vosne-Romanée. Like Clos de Vougeot, which is separated from it by a wall, Echezeaux Grands Crus were founded by the Cîteaux abbey in the 12th and 13th centuries. The 36 hectares of the Echezeaux appellation only allow for production that is as confidential as it is qualitative.
Parcels of Echezeaux Grand Cru are planted on clay-limestone soils with east-southeast exposure at an altitude of between 240 and 340 meters. Generally speaking, wines from this appellation can be enjoyed fairly young, but their dense texture and tight grain develop their full potential after 4 to 5 years of cellaring. Made exclusively from Pinot Noir grapes, Echezeaux Grand Cru red wines have aromas of violet and cherry.
The Echezeaux appellation is synonymous with exceptional terroirs sublimated by the work of estates offering excellent vintages, such as Domaine de la Perdrix, Domaine Charlopin-Parizot, Domaine Méo-Camuzet and Domaine de la Romanée-Conti.
