"Vinified without sulfites and with indigenous yeasts, then aged for 12 months in wood, this Quatourze seduces with its complexity of fruit, spice and a hint of kirsch. On the palate, a consistent body, animated by firm tannins and invigorated by a beautiful freshness, with a pleasant astringency to finish. A lively, elegant, well-typed wine". (Le Guide Hachette des Vins 2021) A pure Languedoc!

Wine rated (2020 guide) 95/100

About the wine:

Intriguing notes of grenadine, pomegranate molasses and vanilla underscored by rhubarb acidity; explosive and concentrated with refreshing minty acidity and a long, spicy finish.

About the domain :

On the outskirts of Narbonne and bordering the Etang de Bages, the Quartouze plateau is a historic Languedoc terroir, with soils of rolled pebbles. The bishops of the cité& audoise had vineyards here. In 1983, engineer Georges Ortola bought an abandoned vineyard, then a second one five years later. Today, with his children Hélène and Nelson, he farms 120 ha biodynamically. His vineyard is used as pasture for sheep in winter.

Domaine noté Recommended (Wine producer recommended by Robert Parker - The Wine Advocate)

About the wine:

The 2018 Languedoc Quatourze La Main de l'Homme is fragrant and elegant, combining notes of vanilla and cedar with black fruits, flowers and peppery spices. It's medium- to full-bodied, with a lush, velvety mouthfeel and a long, mellow finish. [...] This is a fine achievement from a certified organic and biodynamic estate.

Good value for money, with notes of red fruit. Drink immediately, but can also be left to age further.

Typical of the appellation: dense, dark, but with well-controlled tannins, leading to a fairly complete palette of aromas, with an honest length on the palate. A real pleasure.

I loved this racy, slightly peppery wine, reminiscent of the fine Syrahs of the Northern Rhône. It's subtle and long on the palate, a far cry from the heavier Languedoc wines. Confusing but totally successful.
