Made from the estate's oldest vines, the Crozes Hermitage Cuvée Gaby 2020 is full-bodied, silky, and rich, with woody notes, bold flavors of peppery cherries, a velvety finish, and ample length. A thing of beauty! Best left to age for a few more years.

Rated estate (2020 guide) 1*Star (A serious, recommendable production, in line with what one would expect from its appellation(s))

About the estate:

A classic estate in the Mercurol sector, which consistently produces supple wines intended for early consumption. The Gaby cuvée is often more ambitious, with sometimes slightly excessive oakiness in certain vintages with low yields. The reds here are more successful than the whites, as confirmed by our tasting of the 2017 vintage.

About wine:

Cedar and aging spices accentuate the blackberries and cherries on the nose of the 2020 Crozes Hermitage Cuvée Gaby. The wood contains the fruit, tightening the palate into a streamlined shape and limiting the wine's current appeal. The bet is that this wine will behave like previous vintages and emerge from its current cocoon into something softer and more beautiful.

About the estate:

Located in Mercurol, the estate proudly flies the flag for the Crozes-Hermitage appellation, of which it is one of the most reliable producers, especially the more ambitious and complex Gaby vintages.

Note and opinion by Mr. GILLES D. Published on 05/04/2024

This 2020 vintage is a beautiful expression of Syrah, with a refined and structured profile, unlike the more muscular character of previous vintages. Soft, already mellow tannins highlight a complex coulis of black cherry and plum, blueberry and blackberry, complemented by sweet spices on an earthy, vanilla background. The aromatic richness is extended on the palate with beautiful volume and a dense, smooth texture with a delicious creaminess, while the spices, particularly pepper, return with a flourish in the finish, enhanced by a hint of graphite. It is well-made with further potential. After decanting, Gaby looked splendid alongside a Sisteron milk-fed lamb shoulder confit with honey and thyme during the family meal on May 1. Rating = 4.4.
