Château de Péna - Rivesaltes Tuilé Hors d'Age
2*Étoiles
Hachette
"A remarkable length on dried fruit imparted by the rancio (Hachette)"
Aged for several years (more than five years for the Hors d'âge designation) in an oxidative environment using the solera technique, where older wines "educate" younger ones, this Grenache has a very dark mahogany color. The nose is superb: roasted aromas, spices, dried figs, notes of wax from old casks, and dried fruits from the rancio. Continuing in the same vein and adding notes of coffee and nuts, the palate is powerful, rich, full-bodied and well supported by a hint of fresh volatility, with the added bonus of remarkable length on dried fruit conferred by the rancio." About the estate:
The village of Cases-de-Pène takes its name from a 10th-century hermitage built on a limestone rock (penaen in Catalan) that closes off the Agly valley. The black schist soils alternate with ochre clay-limestone soils, forming two superb terroirs on which the twenty or so winegrowers of the local cooperative, founded in 1942 and representing 280 hectares of vines, work.
