"Extraordinary character and personality! Vinous"
"Clos Puy Arnaud 2020 is one of the great wines of this vintage. Rich, deep, and deliciously layered, Clos Puy Arnaud shows just how compelling Côtes de Castillon wines can be. Notes of red fruit, blood orange, spice, and mocha fill the palate. Silky tannins envelop the rich and inviting finish. The saline energy and precision of this wine are simply unreal. This is a wine of extraordinary character and personality." (Vinous 2022)

Rated estate (2022 guide) 4 stars (Producers of very high quality, the pride of French vineyards)
About the estate:
Thierry Valette has always had a taste for wine; his great-grandfather owned the Pavie and Troplong-Mondot châteaux, two of the most prestigious classified growths in Saint-Émilion. In 2000, he took over this 13-hectare property in Belvès-de-Castillon (20 kilometers east of Libourne), choosing to adhere to the demanding standards of biodynamics. Asteria limestone predominates at Puy Arnaud. At the end of the 19th century, the fifteen hectares of the Clos were classified as "Premier Cru" of Saint-Émilion! These soils bring a lot of finesse, freshness, and minerality to the grapes, allowing the bouquet to rival that of the "great terroirs" (floral, spices, truffle) as it gradually develops. The range stands out for its consistency and coherence: the Pervenche cuvée, which has medium aging potential, can be enjoyed within five years for its cheerful fruitiness. Les Ormeaux releases a delicate juice, coupled with exemplary fruitiness in its delicious balance. Velvety in texture and predominantly Merlot, the grand vin is very refined in its tannic length, with well-expressed fruitiness and a stylish, very fresh finish. This is certainly one of the most accomplished cuvées on the right bank. In a blind tasting, this wine will surprise many, as it can rival other more prestigious wines. It is one of the most original wines in Bordeaux!

About wine:
An explosion of ripe berries on the nose, with a magnificent depth of expression. More tannic than it has been for many years, but it is neither bitter nor tight. An excellent wine, balancing power and juiciness. The purity of the fruit expression is evident. pH 3.32. Certified biodynamic. 10% new oak, the rest in large oak vats and amphorae. Unfiltered and unfined. 2023-2036

Rated estate (2022 guide) 2 stars (These very large estates, often blessed with fabulous terroirs, are must-haves which, thanks to their consistency and the excellence of their production, deserve a place in the cellars of discerning wine lovers).
About wine:
An extraordinary concentration of fruit, a burst of invigorating flavors, a grainy, almost rocky texture, ending with a finish full of vitality. A wine that can be opened to accompany a slow-cooked beef dish.
About the estate:
Thierry Valette has owned this Castillon estate since 2000. Carefully crafted, the wine has established itself from the outset as one of the appellation's most interesting vintages, with a deep and eminently distinguished style. The vineyard, now cultivated biodynamically, confirms all expectations. In addition to the first wine, Thierry Valette offers two cuvées designed for everyday drinking (Bistrot and Rouge), which reconcile us with Bordeaux wines for immediate consumption. It is worth noting the consistency of the range and the desire to produce both wines for immediate enjoyment and wines of great depth.

Wine rated (2021 guide) 92/100
About wine:
This wine, made from biodynamically grown grapes, has a beautiful creamy density and is lively, fruity, fresh, and spicy. The slightly dense tannins accompany the acidity and juice right through to the finish. A delicious wine that makes you want to come back for more, with its salty, mouthwatering finish. 2024-2030

About wine:
This bouquet is full of subtlety and complexity, revealing itself step by step. Inviting hints of black berries and peonies followed by a touch of graphite. On the palate, the wine stands out for its ability to combine finesse and fullness. What energy, juice, and harmony, all rounded off by a convincing fruity finish. A very fine achievement. 2025-2035

Note and opinion by Mr. GILLES D. Published on 10/23/2025
Clos Puy Arnaud, the elite of Castillon, is an exceptional wine that shines with panache, vitality, and brilliance, even more so in this sunny and rich 2020 vintage. The wine is solidly structured but nevertheless softened by a beautiful freshness and delicious, pulpy fruit, with powerful, vibrant tannins that deliver a fleshy, smooth texture and exquisite velvety texture. The very long finish is flamboyant and mouthwatering. And this is only the beginning, as it will still have a lot to say over the next ten years! This Gem paired with a Bordeaux rib steak accompanied by potatoes and sautéed cep mushrooms. Rating = 4.6.
