All about AOC Pernand-Vergelesses

Appellation d'origine contrôlée Pernand-Vergelesses is a village appellation of the Côte de Beaunein the Côte-d'Or region. The production area is strictly limited to the commune of Pernand-Vergelesses. In addition to three Grands Crus, it includes 8 climats classified as Pernand-Vergelesses Premier Cru: Sous Frétille (white wines only), Clos Berhet (white wines only), Clos du Village (white wines only), Creux de la Net, En Caradeux, Ile des Vergelesses, Les Fichots, Les Vergelesses.

The vineyards of Pernand-Vergelesses and Pernand-Vergelesses Premier Cru cover around 130 hectares at an altitude of between 250 and 300 meters. Most of the vines face east, south and a few north-east. At the base of the slope, the vineyards are planted on clay-limestone soils mixed with "chaillots" (siliceous residues of flinty limestone). They are loose, rich in potash and phosphoric acid. At mid-slope, the terroir is made up of stony limestone soils that are well-suited to Pinot Noir. At the top, marly, brown or yellowish soils are devoted to Chardonnay. Domaine Chanson Père et Fils perfectly masters the subtleties of the terroir. As for the color of the soil, it's red because of the ferruginous clays, which are excellent for root drainage.

The yellow hue of the Callovien is reminiscent of the Côte de Nuits. Each year, production of Pernand Vergelesses white and red can reach 6200 hectolitres. For your information, the producer classifies his wines into two categories: those named "Villages" and those called "Premier Cru" (like the domaine Dominique Guyon 2016). In addition, the difference between these two products lies in the exposure or altitude of the vines.

Pernand-Vergelesses wines

Visit Pernand-Vergelesses wines and Pernand-Vergelesses Premier Cru are red wines made from Pinot Noir grapes, and 100% Chardonnay whites, the two main grape varieties in Burgundy. The red wines are dark ruby with intense purple highlights. The nose opens with hints of strawberry, raspberry and violet. As the wine ages, it takes on undergrowth and spices. The whites, white gold and pale yellow, turn golden with age. Aromas of white flowers announce amber and honey with age, and spices again.

Red wines

Firm and full-bodied, red wines are generally well-structured. Thanks to typical black and red fruit aromas, the quality of this product remains unique. When it comes to reds, pernand vergelesses uses strawberries, raspberries or cherries with floral accents, specifically violets. After years of cellaring, animal notes and musk begin to appear once the fruit is fully ripe and cooked. When the red is on the palate, it has a clean attack combined with solid tannins. In this way, the harmony between acidity and fatness guarantees this wine's happy maturity.

White wines

White wines account for around 40% of Premier Cru appellations. In principle, they develop the characteristics of Chardonnay through aromas of white flowers and, above all, through the age of the product. There are currently eight classifications in this category: En-Caradeux; Creux-de-la-Net; Ile-des-Vergelesses; Clos-Berthet; Les-Fichots; Village-de-Pernand; Sous-Frétille; Vergelesses. These appellations are used exclusively to produce white wines. Although they have ageing potential, their keeping qualities depend on their climate and method of cultivation.

"Graceful and seductive..."

A harmonious 1er cru with an expressive nose of blackcurrant and red berries. Full-bodied and solid on the palate, with well-melted tannins. A great seducer, it is naturally built for strong-flavored meats such as roast veal, leg of lamb, grilled pork...

"A vintage to be cellared

"The 2020 Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Île des Vergelesses (Maison Louis Jadot) is a solid wine bursting with aromas of cherry, raspberry, kirsch, licorice and spice. Medium to full-bodied, rich and acidic, with lively acids and soft tannins, it will require a little patience. If it becomes rounder with age, it will merit an exceptional score." "Without doubt the appellation's most renowned climate, which has already earned Chanson a number of selections. This 2018 version hits the nail on the head. A very expressive, flattering Pernand, open to ripe Morello cherry and raspberry. A maturity of fruit echoed by an ample, dense, rich, consistent palate, with elegant, fine tannins and a long, spicy finish." (Le Guide Hachette 2022)

Nestled at the confluence of two combes, Pernand-Vergelesses lies at the top of the Côte de Beaune. Solid and full-bodied, it's a great seducer. With its virile but superbly melted tannins, it's a full-bodied, fleshy wine for connoisseurs, whose fatness gives it all the harmony it needs.

Subtlety is the hallmark of this Pernand-Vergelesses blanc, with its brilliant white gold color and nose of white flowers (hawthorn, acacia), followed by amber, honey and spices with age. On the palate, a mineral, harmonious and very amiable wine that will be the companion of your festive tables.

"The nose [...] presents mainly white flower and citrus aromas. There's a fine density to these mineral scents, with good underlying tension as well as lovely detail in this long finish where, once again, the saline character is appealing." (Burghound 2015 - Allan Meadows)

Domaine Bruno Clair - Pernand-Vergelesses 2011

Notes : Robert Parker 85/100
"The 2011 Pernand-Vergelesses comes from a small parcel of 0.24 hectares of vines. It reveals a nutty perfume and a smoky bouquet, while the palate offers a lovely attack and a light, rather phenolic finish. Very good. Drink now." (Wine Advocate August 2013 - Robert Parker). A dry, lively wine, quite light on the finish... Tasty!
