Bierzo
The Bierzo denomination of origin is located in the northeast of the province of Léon. The DO (Denominación de origen) Bierzo, recently awarded in 1989, covers vineyards in 22 municipalities. Today, vineyards cover an area of around 6,500 hectares. The Bierzo production area is divided into numerous small valleys in the mountainous part (Alto Bierzo), and a wide plain (Bajo Bierzo).

Bierzo vineyards are planted on soils composed of a mixture of quartz and schist, and benefit from the region's characteristic hot, dry climate. The low altitude prevents late frosts and favors early grape ripening. These local characteristics allow the vines to flourish. The quality of the Bierzo terroir is perfectly expressed in the vintages offered by Bodega Mengoba and Bodegas de Cacabelos.

Bierzo wines are produced according to strict rules. Red Bierzo wines are mainly made from Mencia and Garnacha Tintorera grapes, while white Bierzo wines are made from Doña Blanca, Godello and Palomino grapes.

"A 100% Mencia as beautiful to look at as it is good to taste, Favorite 1Jour1Vin during Wine Paris 2024!"

"Kolor 2020 is a pure marvel. Intriguing at first glance, it's when you get closer to the bottle that you discover all its sublime details. The work carried out by Rául Pérez, one of the finest winemakers of his generation, and Okuda San Miguel, an outstanding Spanish artist, is simply perfect! In addition to this superb rendering, the care and attention given to the bottle's packaging is reflected within: the wine is well-worked, gourmand and deliciously harmonious. As beautiful as it is good" (Foreign wine buyer 1J1V - Wine Paris 2024)

"Art 2013, a pure Mencia from a fresh vintage, is the estate's top-of-the-range cuvée. It has a nose typical of the 1990s: a concentrated, generously oaked red, rather exuberant, loaded with spices and ripe berries, a little restrained and quite young. The palate is medium-bodied, with good concentration, fine, abundant tannins and a fine acidic structure. It has the structure to age well, with the intensity and balance of old vines." With its intense ruby color, Século reveals aromas of blackberry and blueberry, elegantly balanced by smoky notes of cedar. These fruity aromas are reflected in a juicy, silky, round palate, giving way to a lingering finish. A very successful 100% Mencia!

"Finca La Cuesta is so young it's like a brut de cuve. This is a pure Mencia, aged in French oak barrels for a year. It seems to be more complete than the 2013, powerful, with better balance and incipient complexity. The palate is still marked by ageing, but you can feel the intensity and concentration of the vintage, coupled with a lovely acidity that brings good balance to this powerful style. A very promising vintage for Finca La Cuesta. " (Wine Advocate 2016 - Robert Parker)

"Unwooded, fresh, young and fleshy, Mencia 2015 is the estate's entry-level wine. It is still a champion in its category, presenting intense aromas of balsamic herbs, even a hint of mint, blackberries, black cherries as well as a fleshy, juicy palate with very fine tannins. Ideal for the table." (Wine Advocate 2016 - Robert Parker)

The estate's cuvée blanche combines two of Bierzo's main white wine grape varieties, but above all two exceptional terroirs: clay-limestone soils in Valtuille and Villafranca on which the Godello vines flourish, and pebbles and slate in Carracedo and Espanillo that magnify the Doña Blanca. An expressive, fruity and mineral vintage, bursting with Spanish sunshine!

Characteristically Bierzo in its production, made from 100% Mencia grapes grown at an altitude of 700m on a slate and sand terroir, this cuvée is both complex and expressive, with ripe fruit aromas accompanied by a fine mineral touch. A wine with an assertive personality,
waiting to be discovered!
