The Bierzo denomination of origin is located in the northeast of the province of Léon. The DO (Denominación de origen) Bierzo, recently awarded in 1989, covers vineyards in 22 municipalities. Today, vineyards cover an area of around 6,500 hectares. The Bierzo production area is divided into numerous small valleys in the mountainous part (Alto Bierzo), and a wide plain (Bajo Bierzo).
Bierzo vineyards are planted on soils composed of a mixture of quartz and schist, and benefit from the region's characteristic hot, dry climate. The low altitude prevents late frosts and favors early grape ripening. These local characteristics allow the vines to flourish.
