Calatayud
The Calatayud denomination of origin is located in the south-east of the province of Aragon, and takes its name from a small village emblematic of the region. The appellation covers 46 municipalities and a total area of over 5,600 hectares. The Calatayud DO was granted in 1989.

Calatayud vineyards are planted on limestone soils, composed of mountain scree and red clay. The continental climate generates a wide daily temperature range and relatively moderate rainfall, resulting in water stress that favors grape quality. The work of producers such as Bodegas San Alejandro and Bodegas Claraval enables the full expression of the terroir in quality Calatayud wines.

The terroir ofCalatayud wines enables the composition of its red wines from grape varieties including Grenache (Garnacha Tinto), Tempranillo, Maccabeu, Monastrell, Mazuela, Merlot and Syrah. Calatayud white wines are made from Macabeu, Malvasia, Moscatel de Alejandria, Garnacha Blanca and Chardonnay.

"The Garnacha 2018 Albada red was produced with grapes from old vines and aged in contact with lees for seven months. It has an approachable aromatic profile, with sweet fruit and polished tannins. It is easy to drink and representative of the grape variety and region. It's powerful but retains its balance and elegance."

"The 2008 edition of Pieza el Caldero is composed of 96% Aragon and 4% Grenache, over 70 years old. It was aged for 12 months in American oak barrels before bottling without filtration. Slightly less exuberant than the Pieza el Coll (but also a little more complex), it offers greater density and structure, with ripe, succulent fruit. It should evolve for 1-2 years, and give great pleasure through 2018" (Wine Advocate - Robert Parker).

"The 2008 Real de Aragon Garnacha Centenaria was produced from vines over 80 years old and spent 12 months in American oak barrels. Aromas of black fruit, cigar box, leather and lavender make up an expressive nose, for an opulent, complex and full-bodied Grenache. Give it 1-2 years to fully develop, drinking through 2018." Las Rocas Garnacha Vinas Viejas (Grenache Vieilles Vignes) shines with the panache and typicity of old Grenache vines, sometimes more than a hundred years old, which give it a complex, mineral bouquet, with notes of ripe fruit and spices. A wine that gains in structure and complexity thanks to 12 months' ageing in oak barrels. A 2007 vintage not to be missed!

5/5 (1 review)

This delicious rosé comes 100% from the bodega's favorite grape variety, Grenache Noir. Harvested at full maturity, Las Rocas Rosado is fresh, fruity and intense, both in color and nose. It reveals notes of strawberry and raspberry, typical of Grenache in these latitudes. A well-made, all-purpose wine that's a worthy accompaniment to most summer dishes... A sure bet!

Bodegas San Alejandro - Las Rocas Blanco 2008

Las Rocas Blanco is one of Bodegas San Alejandro's flagship wines, made from 100% Spanish maccabeo grapes, which find an ideal terroir of expression on the Aragonese hillsides of the Calatayud appellation. With its remarkable aromatic intensity and well-balanced alcoholic strength and acidity, this is a fresh, pleasant, sun-drenched wine to drink now, in its prime.
