Sicily
Sicily has been a land of wine since the time of the Phoenicians, who planted the first vineyards here in the 8th century BC. Although "Sicilian " wine began to gain recognition abroad in the 18th century, notably with the sweet wine of Marsala, it was not until the 1970s that Sicilian vineyards underwent tremendous modernization and development.

Sicily enjoys a typically Mediterranean climate, mild in winter and hot, even very hot, in summer. These favorable conditions have enabled it to reach 180,000 hectares of planted vineyards, the largest in Italy. 70% of production is white wine. A large proportion of these Sicilian wines are produced by cooperatives, using both international and indigenous grape varieties such as Cataratto, Grecanico, Inzolia, Nero d'Avola and Nerello Mascales.

Today, Sicily can lay claim to numerous local DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) labels, identifying wines with strong, typically Sicilian characteristics, such as Pantelleria, Monreale or Vittoria. Enthusiasts will appreciate the personality of Domaine Caruso & Minini wines.

Score: Robert Parker 90/100
"Sachia (Perricone) 2008 is an intensely floral and vinous red, with a magnificent core of fruit, on roses and sweet herbs, followed by a long, refreshing finish. Very elegant, a very feminine Sicilian red". (The Wine Advocate - Robert Parker)
