Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

Rated estate (2026 guide) 3 stars (High-quality production, serving as a benchmark in its sector)

About the estate:

Stéphane Sérol is leading his estate on the path to excellence. The 34 hectares of vineyards showcase the Gamay grape variety, which thrives here on granite and porphyry soils. Combined with meticulous biodynamic viticulture, this estate stands out for its carefully crafted, hand-picked wines. The different vintages offer freshness and richness, particularly the Les Millerands cuvée, which is worth waiting for in the cellar. A sure bet for great wines that are a pleasure to drink.

Guide Hachette des vins

Wine noted (guide 2025) 3* Favorite (Millésime 2022) (Exceptional wine)

Rated estate (2026 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer's wines are regularly awarded by the guide)

About the estate:

Talentedly embodying the renaissance of the local vineyard, Stéphane Sérol took over this 37-hectare estate (certified organic and biodynamic) in 1998. Its origins date back to 1700, and his father Robert made it famous in 1971 by selling bottles directly to consumers. A (very) safe bet in the Côte Roannaise.

Wine rating (2024 guide) 91/100 (2022 vintage)

Rated estate (2026 guide) 2 stars (These very large estates, often blessed with fabulous terroirs, are must-haves which, thanks to their consistency and the excellence of their production, deserve a place in the cellars of discerning wine lovers).

About the estate:

Carine and Stéphane Sérol have never done more to promote Saint-Romain Gamay and the Côte Roannaise. On sandy and granite soils at high altitude (380 to 520 meters), the reds draw a delicately smoky, floral, and airy expression from the grape variety. Grown on densely planted vines (8,000 to 10,000 vines per hectare), the grapes are partially or even completely destemmed before being gently vinified. The progress made over the last ten years has been remarkable, and the wines have never been better at reflecting the identity of their terroirs. The whites show particular refinement.
