Domaine Philippe Gilbert
In 1768, François Gilbert left his tavern trade to take over the estate from his father-in-law. In the early 20th century, Philippe Gilbert (grandfather of the current Philippe Gilbert) redesigned and built the estate as it stands today. The various modifications made to this Berrichon-style building have led to Philippe Gilbert to work with visual artist Mario d'Sousa to harmonize the overall structure.

Domaine Philippe Gilbert is a 28-hectare family estate in the heart of the Menetou-Salon appellation. Biodynamically farmed since 2006 and Biodyvin-labeled since 2007, the estate seeks to make the most of the soil in which the vines are planted, namely clay-limestone on Kimmeridgian subsoil. In this way, the Philippe Gilbert domaine reflects the typicality of its terroir in two ways: the cuvée domaine (red and white) is fresh and well-balanced, and Les Renardières (red and white) is vinified in barrels from old vines for complex, powerful wines.

(2012 vintage notes)

A gourmet wine par excellence, Menetou-Salon red expresses itself through aromas of fresh red fruits: strawberry, raspberry, cherry. Fresh and light on the palate, with well-controlled acidity and round tannins. A generous Pinot with salivating length!

"Cuvée Les Renardières rouge 2012 opens with a wild, spicy (pepper) 45-year-old Pinot Noir. Similar to some of Austria's finest Blaufränkisch, it offers fleshy fruit, with notes of black berries, cherry and chocolate. On the palate, the resemblance to a ripe, full-bodied Blaufränkisch persists, thanks to its meaty, powerful yet silky texture. The dark fruit is cut by lively acidity and intense chocolate flavors. The grain of the tannins is fine and the minerality reinforces the drinkability of this excellent Pinot." (Wine Advocate 2014 - Robert Parker)

"Bottled in May 2014 after 18 months maturing on fine lees, Menetou-Salon Les Renardières is a very pretty wine, with an open, balanced and elegant bouquet of celery, fennel seed and white fruit. These aromas are enhanced by a delicate touch of spice from the clay-limestone soils. On the palate, this 100% Sauvignon is rich, complex and elegant, powerfully structured, yet still youthful and crisp, with flavors of carambola, gooseberry, as well as yeast and hazelnut on the finish." (Wine Advocate 2014 - Robert Parker)

"Citrus nose, slender, chiseled palate." (Le Guide Bettane & Desseauve des Vins de France 2016) A bouquet typical of Sauvignon Blanc, a taut, luscious palate, an iodized finish, this Menetou-Salon blanc is a fine affirmation of its terroir.
