"A demonstrative expression where the fruit rivals in intensity"

Only 650 bottles were filled with the 2019 Côte-Rôtie Oenothèque Le Champon, a full-bodied, muscular red with blockbuster appeal and an intense aromatic profile. Melted licorice, black cherry compote, tobacco, forest floor, graphite, and a touch of vanilla are all prominent on the nose. Built around massive wood tannins, this bold 2019 would benefit from another year in a cool cellar to soften up." (Vinous 2024)

Rated estate (2025 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer's wines are regularly recognized by the guide)

About the estate:

After studying in Beaune, then gaining experience in the United States and in the Bordeaux region, on his wife's estate (Ch. Filliol), Stéphane Pichat returned to his homeland to breathe new life into this old property, founded by his great-grandparents. Settling there in 2000, he began bottling wines and, from 5 hectares in Côte-Rôtie and Condrieu, produced wines of consistently impeccable quality.

Wine rating (2022 guide) 91-94/100 (Outstanding wine)

About wine:

More open and opulent than Pichat's other bottlings, the 2019 Cote Rotie Oenotheque offers aromas of brandied black cherries and dried spices. It is very ripe, concentrated, and rich, with dessert-like flavors, a rich and velvety palate, and a long, gently tannic finish. It was aged for two years in new 400-liter barrels, then for 19 months in barrels previously used to age Condrieu.

Wine rated (2022 guide) 94-96/100

About wine:

Sample tasted from the barrel: The 2019 Côte Rôtie Oenothèque is a very small production that has not been destemmed and will spend nearly four years aging in barrels. Its deep purple/plum color reveals a fleshy, sanguine, rich, full-bodied, and exotic Côte Rôtie that offers powerful notes of red and black fruit, bloody meat, vanilla, graphite, and ground pepper. It is full-bodied, concentrated, and tannic, but I like its density on the palate and its overall balance. It will be interesting to see how this puppy handles its four years in oak barrels, but everything looks good so far.
