Vidal-Fleury
30 km south of Lyon, on the banks of the Rhône, in the heart of the Côte-Rôtie vineyards, stands the oldest house in the Rhône valley still in operation: the Maison Vidal-Fleury. Founded in 1781, Vidal-Fleury soon acquired international renown. The visit of Thomas Jefferson in 1787 was a landmark in its history. From the 1920s onwards, the company turned its attention to other terroirs in the Rhône Valley. In the middle of the 20th century, Vidal-Fleury is the emblematic house of Côte-Rôtie. In 2008, thanks to a new cellar dedicated to ageing, Vidal-Fleury embarks on a new development. The company has survived the centuries thanks to the tenacity of men who are resolutely in love with wine. Today, the Maison Vidal-Fleury includes no fewer than 19 of the Rhône Valley's most prestigious appellations.

There are four operations involved in wine-making: vineyard, vinification, ageing and packaging. But they don't all cover the same issues. Vidal-Fleury considers that only the vineyard and ageing really shape the personality of the wine. Vinification and packaging must be treated with excellence, but generate less differentiation between terroirs. The quality of Vidal-Fleury wines lies in the fine origins of the grapes and the patience of the ageing process.

"A tasty Côtes-du-Rhône!

Both lively and enveloping, this Côtes-du-Rhône Blanc will delight your taste buds with its fresh citrus and apricot notes. A hint of minerality counterbalances the silkiness on the palate to create a beautiful harmony. The long finish gives way to pretty floral aromas. Enjoy now with a refined aperitif.

"A must-have!

If you have to choose a Côtes-du-Rhône, don't miss this one from Vidal-Fleury! A beautiful expression of Grenache, full-bodied and delicious, with a well-balanced tannic structure. Candied red fruit notes are enhanced by black pepper and thyme. The finish is long, with hints of cherry. This wine will enhance your aperitifs and match many meat dishes.

"A delicate Crozes-Hermitage".

This is a surprising Crozes-Hermitage, where the greediness of the Syrah reveals floral and red berry notes (wild strawberries, raspberries). The finish is slightly saline, with hints of menthol. In its youth, we recommend opening it at least 2 hours early or decanting it to appreciate its full complexity. A vintage to leave in the cellar for a few years...

"A wine made for laying down".

"The Côte-Rôtie is classic, quite dense and fleshy, but without heaviness, with a palate that blends notes of black fruit and spice, all served by a good fresh length. A fine bottle to drink within 10 years". (Le Guide RVF 2024). The estate's emblematic cuvée since its creation.

Cité Hachette

"The solar 2011, a favorite in the previous edition, is succeeded by a less ambitious 2012 that nonetheless has family resemblances with its "big brother" in its rich, full, silky character and concentrated, warm fruitiness." (Le Guide Hachette des Vins 2015). A straightforward, firm wine, with a gourmet balance between fruit and spice, a touch of oak, and great length in both structure and aroma... A Saint-joseph of choice!

2*Coup de Coeur Hachette

-

88/100 Robert Parker

Note in Guide Hachette: 2**(Remarkable wine) + Coup de Coeur
"Founded in 1780, Vidal-Fleury is the oldest Rhône Valley wine merchant still in business, and part of the Guigal family. The future president of the United States and then new ambassador to the young nation, Thomas Jefferson, was welcomed here in 1787 with a memorable banquet. Today, the focus is on Egypt, through the architecture of the vast cellar (9,000 m2) inspired by the site of Saqqarah. Nothing less than this monumental, mastaba-like setting was needed to welcome this "solar" wine, intense and complex on the nose (blackcurrant, pepper, Zan, thyme, roasted coffee), powerful, full-bodied, dense and long, built by tight, silky tannins. There is majesty in this wine, and the future belongs to it". (Le Guide Hachette des Vins 2014)
