Brunello di Montalcino
The climate of Brunello di Montalcino is Mediterranean, mild and sunny. The vineyard is protected from violent climatic phenomena by the Amiata mountain to the south.
The relationship between Brunello and the Montalcino terroir began in the 19th century with Clemente Santi, who chose this grape variety for his wine, which was recognized and awarded at an Italian agrarian competition and later at international competitions. The use of the Brunello grape then gradually spread, but remained limited to certain connoisseurs. In the second half of the 20th century, it became the emblem of this terroir. Brunello de Montalcino was recognized as DOC in 1966, then DOCG in 1980. Today, this appellation is recognized as one of the most prestigious in Italy. Fans of this red wine will find that it lives up to its reputation by tasting the vintages of Domaine Lisini or Domaine Solaria.

Created in the 1870s by Ferruccio Biondi-Santi, Brunello di Montalcino differs from traditional Italian wines. Indeed, young red wines were popular and sometimes sparkling. Ferruccio Biondi-Santi decided to age the wine in oak barrels, then refine it in bottle. The first official vintage dates back to 1888. Made from Sangiovese grosso grapes, Brunello di Montalcino gained in popularity at the end of the Second World War. With its ruby-red color, Italian Brunello di Montalcino can easily be found online. Casanova di Neri 2017 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova is enhanced by an interlude of elegant rose or crushed flower. Here it appears more prominently, and with more shape and focused intensity. Make no mistake, Giacomo Neri makes wines for pleasure and sensual impact, and this wine (aided by a warm growing season and 15% alcohol) fulfills all those requirements. True to Casanova di Neri, the wine is bold and dark in appearance, and although the bouquet is dominated by purple and black fruits, there is a brief interlude of garden-fresh rose or lilac. This little moment changes the momentum of this wine in a very positive way, allowing a harmony between the low and high tones that are well matched here. The wine is robust, structured and velvety on the palate, but ultimately this expression is much more delicate than I would have expected from a 2017 Brunello.
