The Gigondas Vieilles Vignes 2018 is composed of 80% Grenache, with the remaining 20% divided equally between Mourvèdre and Syrah. Two-thirds of the harvest was not destemmed, and the wine was aged in previously used barrels for 10 months, then in large oak vats. It is a high-flying achievement, with flamboyant aromas of herbal tea and red raspberries. Medium-bodied to full-bodied, its texture is silky, with a long, vibrant finish that ends with a wave of supple tannins." (Wine Advocate 2020) The archetype of a good Mediterranean wine!

Bettane & Desseauve
Rated estate (2020 guide) 5 stars (Exceptional producers, representing the absolute pinnacle of quality in France and worldwide)
About the estate:
Michel Tardieu and Dominique Laurent created this association of excellence in the early 1990s, becoming one of the best micro-negociants in the Rhône Valley. Today, Bastien and Michel Tardieu scour the vineyards to find the best supplies, usually grapes from very old vines, often located in the historic heart of each appellation. A real change has taken place in recent vintages: large barrels, whole-bunch vinification for certain cuvées and, above all, more measured aging have raised the already excellent standard to a new level. A sure bet in the region.

6*Star rating (Exceptional production)
About the estate:
A wine enthusiast, Michel Tardieu teamed up with Dominique Laurent, the brilliant Burgundy wine merchant and winemaker, to start a small wine trading business about ten years ago. Michel Tardieu is unrivaled in his ability to unearth vintages from old vines in all the Rhône appellations. Add to that Dominique Laurent's expertise in aging wine in magnificent barrels, and you have a dynamic duo that produces the most extraordinary vintages in the Rhône.

Wine rated (2019 guide) 17/20
About wine:
Juicy and with a good attack on the palate, even if the nose suggests extreme maturity. It has grip, fine tannins, and real aging potential. Layers of interest, including some welcome salty notes. And no overpowering oak.

Wine rated (2019 guide) 94-96/100
About wine:
A big step forward, the Gigondas Vieilles Vignes 2018 is a remarkable wine offering magnificent aromas and flavors of black raspberries, garrigue, spices, and flowers. Full-bodied, pure, and balanced, with beautiful depth of fruit, it is on par with the best wines of the vintage. This cuvée is composed of 90% Grenache and a balance of Syrah and Mourvèdre, fermented with lots of stems, and aged in barrels once or twice, then for a year in large oak vats.
