"A model of precision and complexity that will delight lovers of this vintage."

Expressive nose of black fruit, roasted meat, smoke, and dried leaves, with pastry spices and hints of a fireplace. Full-bodied with finely grained tannins. Smooth texture and character. An elegant Hermitage with controlled power at every stage. Precise and concentrated, it nevertheless has a bright fruitiness at its core, with succulent cherries and wild currants bringing freshness and vigor. A superb wine." (James Suckling 2024)

Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

Rated estate (2020 guide) 5 stars (Exceptional producers, representing the absolute pinnacle of quality in France and worldwide)

About the estate:

Michel Tardieu and Dominique Laurent created this association of excellence in the early 1990s, becoming one of the best micro-negociants in the Rhône Valley. Today, Bastien and Michel Tardieu scour the vineyards to find the best supplies, usually grapes from very old vines, often located in the historic heart of each appellation. A real change has taken place in recent vintages: large barrels, whole-bunch vinification for certain cuvées and, above all, more measured aging have raised the already excellent standard to a new level. A sure bet in the region.

6*Star rating (Exceptional production)

About the estate:

A wine enthusiast, Michel Tardieu teamed up with Dominique Laurent, the brilliant Burgundy wine merchant and winemaker, to start a small wine trading business about ten years ago. Michel Tardieu is unrivaled in his ability to unearth vintages from old vines in all the Rhône appellations. Add to that Dominique Laurent's expertise in aging wine in magnificent barrels, and you have a dynamic duo that produces the most extraordinary vintages in the Rhône.

Wine rated (2022 guide) 16,5++/20

About wine:

Powerful nose of licorice—heavier and more fleshy than that of the Côte Rôtie Vieilles Vignes. It is then sweet, with a hint of oak. It needs a little time to mellow. Grand and bold, but for now it is more about ingredients than a finished wine.

About wine:

The 2021 Hermitage displays vivid nuances of raspberry, red cherry, leaves, cedar wood, and violet. Polished and round, the 2021 seduces the palate with its great concentration and juicy fruitiness.

Wine rated (2023 guide) 92/100

About wine:

Exotic cherry and raspberry, along with spring flowers, spices, and sappy herbal notes all shine through in Michel Tardieu's 2021 Hermitage, one of the most concentrated, structured, and textured 2021s in the range. With medium-bodied richness, ripe tannins, and a core of ripe, structured fruit, this beautiful Hermitage will continue to drink magnificently for another 10 to 15 years if stored properly.
