Coastal Region

The Coastal Region is the cradle of South African wine production. It includes the well-known areas of Stellenbosch, Paarl and Franschhoek Valley.

As this is a very large region, climates vary greatly. Along the coast, near the city of Cape Town, the oceanic climate is conducive to the production of Sauvignon Blanc and Bordeaux grape varieties (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot). Inland, near the mountain ranges, the climate is more arid. Syrah (Shiraz), Chenin Blanc and Pinotage (a South African variety derived from a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault) are grown here.

Planted at an altitude of 360m, Hemelrand Vine Garden is a blend of Roussanne, Chenin, Chardonnay and Verdelho. On the nose, this blend gives notes of stone fruit and white flowers, with a touch of sweet spices and ripe apple. The palate is powerful and fragrant, with a lovely acidity that sets off this savory richness. - Very limited quantities!

Although still in its youth, Magnetic North Mountain Makstok reveals an impressive nose of grapefruit, honeysuckle and pear. Ungrafted Chenin vines produce a cuvée with fine tannins and lovely acidity. The finish is extraordinarily long. What a thrill!

Developing a companion for Cinsault was no great difficulty for this Chenin Blanc specialist! Over the last few years, Chris Alheit has built up a "library" of old vines, some of which have not found their way into the domaine's parcel-based cuvées... Here they are! All the generosity of Chenin, with crisp apple notes, in a single bottle!

Chris Alheit's brand-new cuvée, Flotsam & Jetsam expresses the distinctive character of Cinsault with finesse and ease. A luscious, juicy, fruity, fresh red... How can you say "no"? How to say "stop"?

Alheit Vineyards - La Colline Vineyard 2016

93/100 Robert Parker

(2015 vintage notes)

The La Colline vineyard bears witness to an extraordinary viticultural heritage: on this parcel are planted vines of Sémillon gris, which has disappeared from the rest of the planet. This cuvée defends the South African identity in all its splendor: great depth, density and texture typical of old Sémillon vines.

(2015 vintage notes)

Cartology is an invitation to explore the Cape heritage through a blend of very old Chenin Blanc and Sémillon vines. This white reveals intense aromas of ripe pear, honey and citrus. Supported by excellent acidity on the palate and a floral touch, it's a real treat for the taste buds!
