Elio Altare Estate
Elio Altare is one of a select group of winemakers responsible for the outstanding quality of Piedmontese wine production. Much to his father's despair, Elio Altare turned the Barolo tradition upside down after his first trip to Burgundy, a journey that would radically transform his approach to winemaking. Going against the customs of the time, he was quickly labeled a "modernist." He pushed his visceral desire to improve Piedmont wines so far that his father disinherited him, and upon his father's death, Elio Altare had to buy back the estate to continue his work.

The Elio Altare estate is located in La Morra, a commune in Barolo renowned for the finesse and elegance of its wines. Like the region's greatest producers, it uses no pesticides or chemical treatments, does not seed the fermenting wines, and does not filter.

The Elio Altare estate is now brilliantly managed by his daughter, the bubbly and vivacious Silvia, with the support of Elio, who is still involved on a daily basis. Anyone who has had the opportunity to drink a Barolo or Langhefrom Elio Altare will remember it fondly for the rest of their life. The wines are racy and elegant, with fabulously silky tannins and incredible balance and freshness.
