Elio Altare Estate
Elio Altare is one of a select group of winemakers responsible for the quality excellence of Piedmont's wines. Much to his father's dismay, Elio Altare turned the Barolo tradition on its head after his first trip to Burgundy, a journey that was to radically transform his approach to wine. Going against the grain at the time, he was quickly branded a "modernist". He pushed his visceral desire to improve Piedmont's wines to such an extent that his father disinherited him, and on his father's death, he became a "modernist", Elio Altare had to buy back the estate to continue his work.

The estate Elio Altare is based in La Morra, a Barolo commune renowned for the finesse and elegance of its wines. Like the region's finest, he uses no pesticides or chemical treatments, does not seed fermenting wines, and does not filter.

The estate Elio Altare is now brilliantly managed by his daughter, the bubbly and sparkling Silvia, with the support of Elio, who is always present on a daily basis. Anyone who has had the opportunity to drink a Barolo or a Langhe fromElio Altare will remember it for the rest of my life. The wines are racy, elegant with absolutely fabulous silky tannins, incredible balance and freshness.

Fresh and supple, Dolcetto d'Alba reveals elegant aromas of violets and red berries. Juicy on the palate, typical of the great Dolcetto wines. A sure bet for the appellation, produced by a great Barolo master!

"The 2019 Barolo is bright and brilliant in the glass, with lovely aromatic presence and balance. Aromatic and full-bodied, with magnificent balance, the 2019 will be easy to drink and enjoy young. Crushed red fruit, blood orange, mint, cinnamon, pomegranate, cedar and sweet floral notes up front. This is a classy Barolo from Altare". (Vinous 2023)

Elio Altare - Barolo Cannubi 2015

94/100 Robert Parker

"The first vintage of this wine was 2011. The Altare family leased a quarter hectare of this famous vineyard cru, and the contract expires (or, hopefully, will be renewed) in 2024. The 2015 Barolo Cannubi is a gorgeous wine with a real brightness and luminosity that transcends the wine's appearance, bouquet and palate. There's real lovely volume, and the wine covers the whole palate evenly and smoothly. In ascending order of intensity among Altare's Barolos, this was the penultimate wine we tasted." (Wine Advocate 2019 - Monica Larner)

Elio Altare - Barolo Cerreta 2013

96+/100 Robert Parker

ready to drink

"The 2013 Barolo Riserva Cerretta shows a lot of freshness and boldness. It's a gorgeous wine, tight, light and uncluttered. It shows generous volume. The wine finishes with lingering notes of earth, rust and dusty marble. The tannins are solid and complete. A job well done" (Wine Advocate 2019 - Monica Larner)

Elio Altare - Barolo Arborina 2015

91/100 Robert Parker

"Barolo Arborina 2012 is a complete, harmonious wine that plays the game well. With model precision, the fruit is harvested exactly 33 days after flowering. The bold aromas of dried cherry, spice, tar, cola and licorice become more intense. Only part of the wine is aged in new barrels. The texture is silky and firm. The result is balanced and full-bodied. This is a classic, complete Barolo that represents the best side of the vintage." (Wine Advocate 2016 - Robert Parker)

"Elio Altare's 2008 Barolo is magnificent in the way it combines layers of fleshy black fruit in the medium-bodied style of the 2008 vintage. Aromas of dark red cherry, flowers, spices and mineral notes emerge among others in this beautiful Barolo with polished tannins. This 2008 is class and elegance incarnate. It's a stellar set of wines that Elio Altare presents to us in this vintage". (Wine Advocate - Robert Parker)
