Calmel & Joseph
Visit Maison Calmel & Joseph was founded in 1995 by Jérôme Joseph, a Languedoc man with a passion for the art of the table and a strong interest in the world of wine. A self-taught wine selector and taster, he wanted to get involved in making wines from the Languedoc, one of the richest and most complex wine-growing regions in France. This became a reality in 2007, when Laurent Calmel, an oenologist with a wealth of experience abroad, joined him.

Convinced of the Languedoc's wine-making potential, they have forged close ties with numerous winegrowers, and vinify, blend and age their wines as naturally as possible, based on the most rigorous plot selection.

Maison Calmel & Joseph cultivation methods are natural and respectful of the environment (no certification labels). The entire range of wines comes from rigorous plot selection.
Hand-harvesting, gentle vinification, meticulous blending and gentle bottling bring out the original balance and aromas of local grape varieties.

"The 2017 Corbières La Madone is a 60-40 blend of Grenache and Syrah that was co-fermented and then aged for a year in barrel. Plums and vanilla mark the nose, leading to a full-bodied, creamy wine that's supple to the touch. It's undeniably modern, but hard to resist, as waves of ripe fruit and subtle oak flood the palate and linger on the velvety finish[...]" (Wine Advocate 2020)

Planted on both clay-limestone and schist soils, the Syrah, Grenache and Cinsault vines produce a more complex wine in 2015 than in the previous vintage. Fruity, gourmet aromas awaken this Saint Chinian, supported by beautiful minerality and well-coated tannins.

"Syrah (50%), Grenache and Carignan collaborate on this oak-aged cuvée. Enchanting, rich and powerful, the nose develops scents of red and black fruits, iris and balsamic notes. Fruity aromas (blackberry, blackcurrant and cherry) are found in a delicate attack, followed by a liquorice woodiness that expresses itself in an ample, velvety body built on fine tannins. The finish is long, fresh and floral. Full-bodied and promising ". (Le Guide Hachette des Vins 2017)

Slightly peppery on the nose, Calmel & Joseph's Vieux Carignan is supple on the palate. With notes of ripe black fruit and garrigue, typical of the grape variety, it asserts itself with greediness. Made from century-old Carignan vines, it's an excellent value for money.

The palate is frank and elegant, with subtle notes of menthol and wood. The Mourvèdre grape, a major component of this blend, makes for a complex cuvée with excellent ageing potential.

"Purple. On the nose, rose petals and plum - very pretty! Exhilarating red fruit, a frank attack on the palate, which then melts into a dry, gourmet finish with a slightly bitter olive note. Very, very fine, fluid tannins, as polished as a walnut desk! Rather aromatic, suave and refined on the palate". (Jancis Robinson)
