What do you need to know about Irancy red wine?

A product of the Burgundy vineyards, Irancy is a red wine made from Pinot Noir grapes. With the French AOC or Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée label and the European AOP or Appellation d'Origine Protégée label, this dry wine is classified as a still wine. Thanks to irancy rouge, you can be transported to the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune without having to travel. But what are the real specifics of irancy red wine?

A short presentation of Irancy red wine

Irancy wine is a product of the vineyards located in eastern France, between the Chablis and Auxerre regions. Administratively, this wine comes from the communes of Vincelottes, Cravant and Irancy, a large amphitheater spread over 315 hectares of vineyards. With this vast expanse of vines, Irancy wine has been christened Village en rouge in the Yvonne department. The vines provide an exceptional natural backdrop to one of the villages that make up the department.
Unlike other terroirs, that of irancy red wine has a temperate oceanic climate with a continental tendency. Since the first production of irancy in 1998, this red wine has continued to improve and establish itself thanks to its quality and typicity. Choosing this wine means treating yourself to a unique product at an affordable price.

What are the different characteristics of Irancy wine?

The main characteristic of Irancy and AOC wines is their Caesar content. This is a rustic grape variety that gives the wines their fruity, tannic aspect. What's more, this type of red wine has a brilliant ruby color combined with an aromatic bouquet marked by a touch of fruit ranging from morello cherry and blackcurrant to blackberry, cherry and raspberry.
These fruity aspects are complemented by floral notes such as violets. On the palate, irancy wine provides a spicy taste of pepper and licorice. If you're a wine enthusiast, you probably know that the aroma of this beverage improves with age. As Irancy ages, it develops a touch of undergrowth, leather, humus and truffle. You can enjoy this wine over the next 3 to 4 years. Vintages from the same estates as irancy can sometimes last up to 10 to 20 years. Both rich and full-bodied, this type of wine is both charming and solid. With a predominantly tannic composition, irancy remains a velvety, firm product.

As for the grape variety, it's pinot noir that most often makes up Burgundy wines. The red wines of Irancy have one of the king grape varieties. In principle, this rare grape variety dates back to the Roman conquest of Gaul. It should be pointed out that the irancy appellation does not represent a Premier Cru, but rather an association of estates and climats, each with its own specificity.

If you're planning to enjoy an irancy wine, you may want to try it with meurette eggs. However, this doesn't mean you can't enjoy this wine with main courses such as poultry stew, pate, ribs or meat in sauce. And don't forget to pair it with cheeses such as Epoisses, Camembert, Cantal or Soumaintrain.

15,5/20 RVF

"The 2013 cuvée Soufflot, made from pinot noir alone, is the same barrel as the 2012 version, earning Stéphanie Colinot a second Favorite in two years. A consecration for the young winemaker, who has practiced a perfectly controlled eighteen-month barrel ageing process. The wine's velvety color is immediately seductive. Spices spice up a racy nose with hints of violets and red fruit. The palate is equally complex, with a frank attack, rich, dense, powerful and fine at the same time. Be patient a little longer with this bottle, which combines elegance and character, built for ageing". (Le Guide Hachette des Vins 2017)
