Bettane & Desseauve
Wine rated 91/100 (2021 vintage)
Rated estate (2025 guide) 2 stars (A serious and recommendable production, but a little more consistent and uniform than the previous one)
About the estate:
After Bernard Durand, who oversaw the conversion of Pic Saint-Loup from mixed farming with a focus on sheep to its recognition as a quality wine-growing area, his nephew Régis Valentin took over the technical reins. Without fanfare, this is a domaine to seek out for its Vieilles Vignes cuvée, which is powerful yet flavorful, its Clos des Combes, and its Grande Cuvée. The Cuvée Madame is even more ambitious and the rosé is consistently delicious.

About the estate:
Régis Valentin, oenologist and cellar master, took over the estate in 2001, which was founded in 1960 by the Durand-Valentin families. He produces wines from 80 hectares of vines (in conversion to organic farming since 2019) on beautiful terroir of hard limestone and red clay. A sure bet in the Languedoc region.

Note and opinion by Mr. GILLES D. Published on 10/27/2024
Distinctive and full-bodied, this cuvée offers a fullness of sweet spice notes, slightly bitter cocoa, and coffee, enhanced by succulent flavors of stewed cherries and blackcurrants. This rich cocktail is reflected in an opulent, fleshy, and lively palate, supported by present, well-coated, and deep tannins. A subtle, slightly dusty unctuousness lends smoothness to the texture, while a hint of graphite brings a very pleasant freshness. The warm finish is convincing with its notes of licorice. Young and promising. Very reasonable price. The powerful, sapid and dynamic style of this Pic makes it an ideal companion for a venison stew with fresh Lozère porcini mushrooms and tagliatelle. Rating - 4.2.
