Cornas
The area covered by this appellation is limited to the commune of Cornas in the Ardèche department on the right bank of the Rhône. Known since the Middle Ages, Cornas is a typical wine of the Rhône southern France. It gets its nickname of "black wine" from its very dark, almost black color.

Cornas, an AOC from the Valence hillsides

Indeed, this Rhône wine has enjoyed an uninterrupted reputation since the 10th century. Cornas has graced royal tables in France and abroad. In the 19th century Cornas wine already had the same reputation as Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Only phylloxera, followed by urbanization, came close to destroying this cru. AOC status and the revival of quality have enabled the vineyard to regain its momentum. Cornas wine was awarded a local AOC in 1938.

Located to the east of the city of Valence, the commune of Cornas benefits from a unique terroir combining the complexity of a semi-continental climate influenced by the Mediterranean and the richness of sandy-clay, granitic soils rich in iron oxide.

The soils of the Cornas vineyards are characterized by silty granite and gneiss deposits, with the vines planted on very steep granite terraces supported by low walls. Facing south/southeast, the vineyards benefit from plenty of sunshine. Its orientation gives this appellation an early ripening. It is the first red wine to be harvested in the northern Côtes du Rhône. Syrah is the only grape variety authorized in the entire appellation area.

The cultivated area of Cornas covers around 116 hectares, with annual production limited to some 4,200 hectolitres of wine. The grape variety used for Cornas wines is exclusively black Syrah, which gives the wine its rich aromatic palette, interesting tannin structure and deep color. Vinification begins with a long vatting period, followed by two years' ageing in wooden barrels.

The initial scents of wines from this Cornas appellation are of ripe red and black fruits such as redcurrant, blackberry and blueberry. Secondary scents are more distinctive, suggesting licorice, pepper or truffles. The Cornas red wine can be cellared for an average of four to fifteen years from vintage, and should be served and enjoyed at a temperature of between 18 and 19 degrees Celsius to fully reveal its aromatic palette. The vines of this region have given birth to grapes that have the art of marking the mouth with their aromatic notes.

Buying Cornas

Visit Cornas vineyard is home to a number of renowned houses offering complex wines, some vintages of which carry the colors of the Rhône vineyards high.

Alain Voge is the perfect example of a perfectly balanced wine. This family estate is one of the most renowned in the region, and buying Alain Voge wine is the assurance of discovering a wine that expresses the entire terroir of the Côte du Rhône vineyard. The Cornas 2013 vintage is an exceptional wine in which you'll find all the family's winemaking expertise. The same is true of Cornas from Maison Chapoutier, whose terroir-driven wines are the fruit of ancestral winemaking methods. The grapes are harvested by hand, and fermentation lasts ten days, followed by a three-week maceration. Cornas par Chapoutier is then aged in French oak barrels (80%) and concrete tanks (20%). This method preserves the minerality of the beverage. Cornas Chapoutier is a wine of great tannin density and endless persistence on the palate. The purplish highlights give depth to this wine, which is an ideal accompaniment to marinated meat or a large piece of grilled game. Our range also includes Saint-Péray and Saint-Joseph,

"A great Northern Rhône wine!

"Deep garnet-red with a tawny disk, the color announces a welcome evolution. On the nose, notes of hyacinth mingle with fragrances of red fruit crumble, buttered brioche and cumin of confounding delicacy. The charm continues on the suave, ample and silky palate, served by a deliciously spicy woodiness and fine tannins that carry through to a noble bitter finish. Absolute class for this Cornas, just a breath away from Favorite. (Le Guide Hachette 2024)

"Everything you'd expect from a Cornas and more!

"50-year-old vines and 16 months' ageing in wood have presided over the birth of this confidently balanced, nuanced cuvée, with its open nose of raspberry jelly, violet candy and black pepper, underlined by toasty, caramelized oak notes. A lovely eloquence that continues on the round, concentrated palate, stimulated by a fine mentholated freshness and supported by powerful tannins with an auspicious firmness". "The most beautiful representation of Cornas

"Powerful yet delicately charming, this wine presents seductive aromas of black plum, black currant, violet, white mushroom and fresh earth, which merge into a complex bouquet with an abundance of violets. Well-integrated tannins support a palate of pure blackberry, black cherry, dried herbs, baked earth and oak spices. The finish is long and refined. Cellar until 2035+ to reveal its full depth." (Wine Enthusiast 2024) A magnificent debut.

"Precise and subtle, the nose combines violets, wild strawberries, Sichuan pepper and aromatic herbs (sage, savory). Intense, caressing, supported by a firm, long tannic structure, the palate is convincing with its fresh finish, tinged with a singular bitterness". (Hachette 2024)

This Cornas has a nose of spices, violets and blueberries. Fresh on the palate, it's a rich wine with silky tannins. Its mineral tension and acidity give it superb balance. Wait a few more years for its full potential to express itself.

"Quintessence by Jean-Luc Colombo

"Notes of scorched earth, salt and iron mingle with punchy blackberries and plums in this opulent but very precise Syrah. The producer's flagship in Cornas, this bottling is made only in exceptional vintages from the free-run juice of low-yielding, 70-year-old vines. Brilliant and rich, yet light and airy, this wine is delicious in its youth, but still has decades of evolution ahead of it. Drink it until 2040. (Wine Enthusiast 2021)

"Anne Colombo's secret garden

"Juicy aromas of ripe red fruits and plums rest delicately on green olives, provoking the taster's appetite. On the palate, red and black fruits are delicately framed by Indian spices, while the olive brine never ceases to seduce with its formidable flavor. Mouth-watering acidity and silky tannins complete its charm, making this wine irresistible." (Wine Enthusiast 2023). Simply superb!

"The Colombo soul

"The 2020 Cornas Les Ruchets shows less oak than previous vintages, with a nose of sappy red fruits. It's medium- to full-bodied, silky - not chunky or muscular - with a long, refined finish." (Wine Advocate 2022). Impressive!

This Cornas, with its deep core of black fruit, notes of cedar wood, chocolate and hints of game, is a rich, complex wine. It's full-bodied and concentrated, making it a perfect match for small game (hare, wild rabbit) and waterfowl (mallard, greylag goose).

"A fine terroir wine

"Powerful, concentrated, deep nose of black fruits (blackberry, blackcurrant). On the palate, the tannins are well coated, this powerful wine already tastes very well, a style of wine all in finesse for the appellation." Only one or two barrels for this cuvée, a symbol of elegance, made from a micro-parcel of vines over 100 years old. Impressive in both flavor and structure, this wine is a real treasure. A beautiful black fabric dresses this Syrah with character. A Cornas with undeniable assets, with an intense, pure nose of violets, fresh blackberry and tonka bean; and a rich, fleshy palate, delivering a savory sap of juicy black berries, supported by chiseled tannins and perfectly-adjusted oak. A cornas that's already expressive, but which will become even more so with age.
