Chassagne-Montrachet
The appellation Chassagne-Montrachet is a communal appellation of the Côte de Beaunein the Côte-d'Or region, dating from 1937. It covers the communes of Chassagne-Montrachet and Remigny. Within this appellation, there are 19 climats classified as Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru and three Grand Crus: Montrachet Grand Cru, Bâtard-Montrachet and Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet. Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru climats include La Romanée, Les Grandes Ruchottes, La Grande Montagne, Vigne Blanche, Morgeot, Ez Crottes, Les Chaumes, Vigne Derrière, Clos Saint Jean, Les Chenevottes, La Roquemaure...

The broad, beautiful Montrachet hillside is the perfect setting for the two Burgundy grape varieties. Pinot noir and Chardonnay flourish side by side here, thanks to the complexity of the terroirs. Large marble stone quarries form a rock face. The terroir lies at an altitude of between 220 and 320 meters, and from the summit upwards comprises raucacian abrupts, a Callovian slope with a reflection of Argovian marl, and Bathonian limestone. Depending on the climate (localities with particular qualities), the soils are calcareous and stony, marly or sandier (Jurassic bedrock).

The production of Chassagne-Montrachet wines and Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru is divided between white wines, produced from some 180 hectares of Chardonnay vines, and reds, covering 120 hectares of the terroir. The former account for almost 60% of total wine production, which amounts to almost 16,000 hectolitres a year. Particularly noteworthy among this production are the Chassagne-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru crus offered by the Joseph Drouhin Estate and Domaine Roger Belland.

Le Chassagne Montrachet Vin de climats

The excellence of Burgundy's two grape varieties, Pinot noir and Chardonnay, flourish on a broad, magnificent hillside in the south of the Côte de Beaune, between 220 and 325 meters above sea level. Known since the Middle Ages, climats are the names given in Burgundy to parcels of vines shaped by the hand of man. Each climat has its own specific characteristics. The wine produced takes the name of the climate in which the vines grow. This guarantees the uniqueness of each wine, because nothing is left to chance: the exposure of the plots, the type of soil, the surrounding vegetation. This tradition, handed down from generation to generation, has given birth to the world-famous Chassagne Montrachet. The vins Chassagne Montrachet is available in Chassagne Montrachet white and Chassagne Montrachet red.

Chassagne Montrachet white

Made from the Chardonnay grape variety, the Chassagne Montrachet white is a French Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée wine. This wine is the ideal partner for white meats, noble poultry and veal in sauce. Fish is no exception. Chassagne Montrachet Blanc 1er cru goes perfectly with lobster, crayfish and foie gras. Montrachet wines are best served between 12 and 14 degrees. These are generous, powerful, full-bodied wines. It has a golden lamé color with subtle green highlights. On the palate, it reveals all its aromas: acacia, hawthorn. Floral touches of honeysuckle and verbena. Not forgetting the distinctive flinty taste of its climate. Mellow, opulent and intense, Chassagne Montrachet blanc can be aged for twenty years or so, retaining all its vivacity.

Chassagne Montrachet noir

Made from Pinot Noir grapes, the Chassagne Montrachet noir This wine also benefits from an A.O.P. label. Serve it with dishes such as roast lamb or grilled pork. It will surprise the taste buds with a curry. Pheasant will go beautifully with a Chassagne Montrachet red Premier Cru. These are wines for laying down. They are rich and powerful, with a vivid deep purple color. On the palate, they release aromas of red fruits and a spicy note. Serving temperature is 14-16°C. These Chassagne Montrachet white and black wines are aged in barrels or vats, allowing the unique character and qualities of each cuvée to shine through. In Burgundy, the winegrower is a craftsman of the land, cultivating it like a garden, and making each wine his own. Chassagne Montrachet an unforgettable taste experience.

This cuvée is richly expressive, with pleasant aromas of wild strawberry, morello cherry and raspberry on the nose. The palate is full-bodied, with notes of spice and pepper. In its youth, it's best to open it a little in advance, so that the wine reveals all its character and richness.

"A well-kept treasure with delicate aromas of flowers and nuts!"

Clos Pitois, the estate's monopoly, has enjoyed a high reputation since 1421, when it was created by the monks. It is one of Chassagne's most renowned crus. On the nose, a cross between flowers and citrus fruit is supported by notes of toast and hazelnuts. The palate offers a basket of fruit dominated by citrus. This round, full-bodied, elegant wine is particularly persistent.

"The Chassagne-Montrachet 2014 Les Battaudes, made from clay soils and aged 30% in new barrels, has a fragrant nose of white flowers, white peach and a hint of Japanese yuzu - all well-defined and nicely integrated with the wood. The palate is vibrant on the attack, with crisp acidity, notes of orange peel and a hint of mulberry leaf. The acidity, well gauged and carrying a certain harmony and refinement on the finish, almost makes you think of a Premier Cru. Excellent." (Wine Advocate 2016 - Robert Parker)

With this 2013 vintage, Domaine Lamy-Pillot reveals "the grace and finesse of Morgeot, all mineral lace and subtle length" ( Le Guide des Meilleurs Vins de France 2016 - RVF) Halfway between smoothness and tension, this well-balanced cuvée is a worthy representative of the cru.

Domaine Lamy-Pillot - Pot Bois 2013

The Pots Bois vines are grown on very draining, stony soils. As a result, this wine has vigor, tonicity and a notable iodine freshness. The most mineral of Domaine Lamy-Pillot's cuvées.

The low yields of the 2012 vintage have produced a Chassagne-Montrachet blanc of fine aromatic concentration. With aromas of white flowers such as acacia and hawthorn, accompanied by a touch of butter, it will keep well in the cellar and develop honeyed notes.

2*Coup de Coeur Hachette

"If whites are tending to supplant reds in Chassagne, it's a pinot noir that puts this estate in the middle of the Morgeot vineyards in the limelight, for a wine made from a plot adjoining the winery. The jurors praised the wine's deep purple color, its intense nose with hints of ripe cherry and blackcurrant, and its frank, generous attack, which opens onto a fleshy, well-structured palate: all the assets needed for happy aging". Produced from the vines closest to the estate, Premier Cru Morgeot rouge 2013 gives off lovely notes of fresh red fruit. It is above all this freshness that characterizes this cuvée with its silky tannic structure.

Domaine Lamy-Pillot - 1er Cru La Grande Montagne 2013

"Grande Montagne concentrates more of its substance, including an acidity that nicely lengthens the wine." (Le Guide des Meilleurs Vins de France 2016 - RVF) It's thanks to an abrupt, high-altitude, rocky terroir that this Premier Cru displays this beautiful mineral tension. It is the perfect accompaniment to gourmet dishes based on noble fish or shellfish.
