Coteaux du Layon Chaume
Chaume wines are sweet white wines from the Loire Valley. A high-quality vineyard, the Chaume appellation enjoyed a brief existence from 2003 to 2009, tormented by successive legal battles. Since 1950, Chaume had been a village name within the Coteaux du Layon appellation. The Chaume appellation was first obtained in 2003, with the addition of the "Premier Cru" label. Wines from the 2002, 2003 and 2004 vintages were marketed under the appellation Chaume-Premier Cru des Coteaux du Layon. A Conseil d'Etat ruling of July 27, 2005 overturned this recognition on the grounds that the "Premier Cru" label gave the impression of a hierarchy in relation to neighboring crus. The appellation Chaume Premier Cru des Coteaux du Layon therefore only existed for wines from the 2002, 2003 and 2004 vintages. It was replaced by the Chaume appellation by decree on February 21, 2007. However, on March 30, 2009, the Conseil d'Etat again annulled the AOC, accusing it of weakening the reputation of the AOC Quarts-de-Chaume. Since the 2009 vintage, the wines are once again produced under the Coteaux-du-Layon Chaume appellation.

Basically, this vineyard, formerly classified as AOC, covers an area of 70 hectares in the commune of Rochefort-sur-Loire , with an annual production of no more than 1,100 hectolitres. The wine is made exclusively from Chenin grapes and benefits from the action of noble rot. The grapes are hand-harvested at over-ripeness, in successive selections. Its color is deep yellow to golden. Vin de Chaume can be kept for ten years or more, depending on the vintage. Within the appellation, Château de la Roulerie's wine stands out.

"A great sweet wine from the Davy family, a true benchmark!

"This excellent wine immediately delights with its aromas of quince, mirabelle plum and candied fruit. Aromas that infuse a mouth that's suave without heaviness, silky, elegant, full-bodied and long, with unfailing harmony, perfectly balanced by freshness. A model for the appellation, and for a long time to come. (Le Guide Hachette 2024)

Cité Hachette

"It's on these terroirs and thanks to this river that noble rot can do its work and settle on the grapes, concentrating them in sugar. This 2011 has all the characteristics of these sweet wines, with notes of dried fruit and acacia, a supple mouthfeel and a slightly acidic finish. Enjoy with fruit salad or pan-fried foie gras". (Le Guide Hachette des Vins 2014)

A Chaume with a brilliant orange-yellow color and a powerful, complex nose, revealing notes of exotic fruits (mango, passion fruit...). A mellow wine with a delicate, refined layer, with aromas of quince and honey. It combines richness, lightness and freshness in beautiful harmony. The perfect companion for a tarte Tatin...

Note: Guide Hachette 2**(Remarkable wine)
"As for Chaume 2010, born of old chenin (seventy years old), it bears witness to the secret magic of beige schist. A delicious, fresh nectar, also awarded two stars". (Le Guide Hachette des Vins 2013). A Chaume that first expresses itself with floral aromas (rosemary, basil) before blossoming into a bouquet of exotic fruits and mango... Racy and subtle!

New vintage, 2008 rated: Bettane & Desseauve 15/20
This lovely Côteaux du Layon Chaume expresses itself powerfully with exotic notes and figs. A note of freshness is perceptible (rosemary, Provencal herbs). On the palate, we find the same aromatic palette as on the nose, with density and length.

Château de la Roulerie - Les Aunis 2009

Note: Wine Spectator 93/100, Médaille d'Or Paris 2011
On the nose, the Aunis reveals a succession of floral and vegetal aromas, followed by white fruits (peach, pear, quince...) and citrus fruits (grapefruit)... Rich, unctuous and long-lasting, a combination of character very typical of the grape variety, its vintage and its fabulous terroir.

Château de la Roulerie - Coteaux du Layon 2008

Hand-harvested with 3 successive selections, the Chenin berries that produce this Coteaux du Layon 2008 have received the benefits of noble rot, to give a typical sweet wine that combines very stewed ripe fruit and citrus peel with exotic woods and tobacco. Exotic fruit on the palate, with a lively, elegant minerality and superb freshness. A Layon of rare elegance!
