Bettane & Desseauve
Rated estate (2024 guide) 4 stars (Producers of very high quality, those who are the pride of French vineyards)
About the estate:
The estate offers expressive wines from the finest vineyards in Vaucluse and Gard. Everything is done with the utmost respect for the terroirs, with the aim of producing wines that live up to their potential. Madeleine Delorme, accompanied by her daughter Ambre, continues to work with great care and determination in the spirit of excellence that characterizes the estate and this winegrowing family. A superb range of salty, full-bodied whites and deep, delicate reds, enlivened by a thirst-quenching tension and a perfectly balanced structure. The estate is moving towards increasingly racy and precise wines. The fourth star is fast approaching.

About the estate:
Created in 1986 by Francis Delorme and his son Christophe, the 58-hectare estate (certified organic and biodynamic) is spread over 38 plots and eight communes. Following Christophe's untimely death in 2015, his wife Madeleine and their daughter Ambre took over the reins of the estate. Advocates of low yields, the Delormes produce vintages with disconcerting ease, whether in Tavel, their original stronghold, Lirac, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, or "simple" Côtes-du-Rhône. Unmissable.

About wine:
A blend of equal parts Grenache and Syrah aged in vats, the 2021 Lirac la Dame Rousse effortlessly combines notes of cherries and blueberries on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied to full-bodied, taut, with silky tannins and a long peppery finish.

Wine rated (2022 guide) 15,5+/20
About wine:
Tasted blind. Young, primary aromas—fresh dough, licorice. Good acidity with floral notes and dark berries hidden beneath a layer of fine tannins. Good concentration of fruit that needs time to intertwine with the tannic weight but should integrate nicely.

Note and opinion by Mr. GILLES D. Published on 01/11/2024
Less sunny and less aromatic than the two previous vintages, La Dame Rousse 2021 is nonetheless a good Lirac with a rich profile, still as distinctive as ever, but moderately indulgent. With a tangy structure, the harmonious, supple and lively palate reveals concentrated flavors of black plum, blackcurrant, cherry and raspberry, with hints of zan and vanilla in the background. Great finesse of grain backed by silky and still taut tannins. The finish is smooth and refreshing with peppery notes. Clearly, it would be best to wait at least another year for the "Dame" to relax a little. It should also be noted that the price has risen significantly in recent years. This cuvée was served with a royal couscous and harissa. Rating = 3.8.

Note and opinion by Mr. MATHIEU W. Published on 08/09/2023
Medium-deep ruby color. On the nose, mainly red fruit, cherries, cranberries, raspberries, red berries. In addition, undergrowth and some spiciness, a hint of lava. On the palate, the red fruit, especially red berries, comes through well. Strong tannins, but also fine acidity and grip. Medium-bodied and the finish is on the short side. An elegant wine, to be sure. But given its reputation and price, I find the wine somewhat disappointing. Does have aging potential. Score: 15+/20
