Marsannay

Marsannay, a discreet Burgundy wine

Appellation d'origine contrôlée Marsannay is a communal appellation of the Côte de Nuits (containing the wines côte de Nuits-villages and Hautes côte de Nuits), in the Côte-d'Or region. In the foothills of the city of Dijon lies the Côte de Nuits vineyard, home to the Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée. Marsannay. Closely related to the Fixin and Gevrey Chambertin appellations, with which it shares certain characteristics, the Marsannay wine is produced in three communes: Marsannay-la-Côte, Couchey and Chenôve.

Covering an area of almost 230 hectares on small hillsides at an altitude of 300 meters, with exposures ranging from sunrise to midday, the appellation was recognized in 1987. However, Marsannay wine was recognized for its quality much earlier, in the image of Louis XIV, who ordered it to his table. These wines are classified into climats, also known as lieux-dits, and some of them have applied for Premier Cru status.

The Marsannay vineyards are planted on a wide variety of soils dating from the Middle Jurassic period: bedded sandstone, Entroques limestone, Oestra acuminata marl, the old Ouche river bed or alluvial pebbles...

The Marsannay appellation produces red and rosé wines from Pinot Noir grapes, and white wines from Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc grapes. The only communal appellation that can be produced in all three colors, Marsannay's typicity is that of the Côtes de Nuits. The Marsannay wines Red wines are intense in color, with a loose bouquet of red and black fruits. The powerful, generous attack on the palate harmonizes with a fat, long finish. The wines Marsannay white wines exploit the full range of citrus fruits and white flowers. On the palate, they are often full and round, with a long, mineral finish. Red and white wines can be drunk deliciously young, but will reveal the full typicity of their terroir with age. Their quality is particularly evident in the crus offered by the Domaine René BouvierDomaine Olivier Guyot and Domaine Philippe Charlopin-Parizot.

Wines with character

The appellation, under its Village name, presents Marsannay rosés and Marsannay whites. Red winemaking produces tannic wines with an intense color, a nose of undergrowth for aged wines and a harmonious structure on the palate thanks to their pinot noir grape varieties. The wine burgundy rosé Marsannayblended mainly with pinot noir and pinot gris, presents aromas of freshly crushed fruit. The wine Marsannay whiteMade from chardonnay and pinot blanc grapes, this wine is pale gold in color, with green hints of grape stalks.

An exceptional terroir

The Burgundy hillsides on which the appellation grows Marsannay benefit from a cool oceanic climate, bathed in southern and continental influences. Even though temperatures are quite low and mild, the vineyards of Marsannay is protected by the Morvan massif and the great plateaus of the Burgundy region. The soil of the coombes on which the vineyards are planted is rich in limestone, marl and sediment. Thanks to the diversity of soil, altitude, air movement, sun exposure and slope, each vineyard has a unique character. Marsannay wine has its own personality.

"A Marsannay that has everything to please... "

"The Marsannay Charme Aux Prêtres 2022 has a light limestone/talc fragrance on the nose that combines nicely with bright red fruits. There's a lovely energy to this wine. The palate is well balanced with sappy red fruit and a little more compact than the Champs-Perdrix, but it should 'spread its wings' once in bottle and in two or three years." (Vinous 2024)
