Lalande-de-Pomerol: aroma and authenticity

The Lalande-de-Pomerol appellation d'origine contrôlée is a communal appellation in the Bordeaux vineyards, located some 50 km east of Bordeaux, near the northern town of Libourne. The vineyards are laid out in successive terraces and cover two communes: Lalande-de-Pomerol and Néac. The appellation is separated from its neighbor Pomerol by the Barbanne river. The Lalande-de-Pomerol vineyard covers 1,130 hectares, producing around 50,000 hectolitres of wine a year.

The Lalande-de-Pomerol appellation d'origine contrôlée was obtained on December 8, 1936, and benefits from a privileged geographical location.

Lalande-de-Pomerol: an appellation d'origine contrôlée guaranteeing high quality

The vines of the Lalande-de-Pomerol appellation are planted on a terroir whose soils are a mixture of clay (very deep in some areas), gravel and even sand in the western part, near the Barbanne river. The nature of these soils is perfectly suited to Merlot, which makes up the majority of the vineyard.

The Lalande-de-Pomerol appellation produces red wines made exclusively from the Merlot grape variety, most often in association with Cabernet Franc, and to a lesser extent with Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. Lalande-de-Pomerol wines have a dark ruby-garnet color and are very expressive, marked by red berries (redcurrant, strawberry, cherry, raspberry, etc.) to which are added aromas of vanilla, toast and spices. Separated from the commune of Pomerol by the Barbanne river, the Lalande-de-Pomerol appellation d'origine contrôlée is defined by its deep red color, synonymous with wines as powerful as they are full of bouquet. The attack is always straightforward, the palate solid, fleshy and ample, where the tannins are present, but never hard, becoming velvety. Lalande-de-Pomerol wines can be aged for 10 years or more.
Merlot dominates the Lalande de Pomerol blend by far, giving it roundness and finesse. Even if these wines are very similar to those of Pomerol, they have their own identity, especially as Cabernet Franc gives them a sustained structure, and Cabernet Sauvignon a smooth color and the ability to age in optimal conditions.

The Lalande-de-Pomerol appellation offers some very pleasant surprises, such as wines from Château Moulin La Gravière, Château La Fleur de Boüard, or Etablissements Thunevin.

"The 2018 Les Cruzelles is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, with 40% new oak and 14.5% alcohol. Deep garnet-purple in color, it bursts from the glass with dynamic scents of crushed blackberries, juicy black cherries and ripe plums, as well as hints of menthol, dark chocolate and star anise. The medium- to full-bodied palate offers black fruits on the palate, soft texture and great freshness, finishing long and lively." (Wine Advocate 2021). A real pleasure!

"Siaurac has long made "nifty" Lalande-de-Pomerol and the 2015 is well worth exploring. It has a sensual, fruity bouquet with plenty of black cherry and cassis that don't take over, however. The palate is medium-bodied with a fine grain of tannin. There are a few layers of new wood that still need to be absorbed, but there's enough fruit to get there. The finish shows seductive notes of truffle and white pepper that bring a nice salinity." 2*Coup de Coeur Hachette

"Born of pure Merlot, aged for eight months in vats and twelve in barrels, the estate's 2012 is a winner: its deep color with youthful violet highlights is a good omen, as is its bouquet combining flowers and very ripe black berries. Its warm character is tempered by good acidity and silky tannins. A complete wine, already elegant and suitable for laying down". (Le Guide Hachette des Vins 2016)

"The 2011 La Fleur de Boüard is rich, full-bodied, ripe and assertive. Big, mellow and delicious, it features extra-ripe Merlot harvested late and with low yields. In a relatively short space of time, Hubert de Bouard (owner of Château Angelus) has created a benchmark for the greatness of Lalande de Pomerol. When tasted after 10 to 15 years, the Bouard wines consistently prove their conviction that they sit on a great terroir, even if this appellation is humble compared to its close neighbors, Pomerol and Saint -Emilion." (Wine Advocate 2014 - Robert Parker)

Château La Croix de Bourseau 2011 - Vieilles vignes

Cité Hachette

"A wine of good concentration inherited from old vines, which immediately reveals a deep bouquet of ripe grapes underlined by melted oak. The palate, in unison, is fleshy, suave and powerful. Still harsh on the finish, it will benefit from ageing". (Le Guide Hachette des Vins 2015)

This estate's Cuvée Compostelle is an approachable red, with notes of cinnamon, spices and morello cherry, with a pleasant toasty touch. Like a delicate, airy lace, this cuvée offers plenty of gourmandise on the finish, in a very elegant profile... A well-made Lalande!

Notes : Robert Parker 87/100, Guide Hachette citation
"A wine of pure Merlot with a very dark color, an open bouquet and great finesse, revealing a good grape well aged in barrels (twenty months). The palate reveals very ripe fruit. Very supple, it is underpinned by tannins that have already melted, without any aggressiveness. Serve this 2008 soon with red meats and hard cheeses, or wait two or three years. This is a fine representative of the Lalande-de-Pomerol appellation, fruity and slightly woody, with a pleasant toasty nuance. The attack on the palate is silky and delicate, well-balanced with a pretty note of red fruit and an elegant finish with a fruity character. Ideal with ceps à la bordelaise, but also a fine piece of red meat...

Château Moulin la Gravière - Lalande-de-Pomerol 2000

Catherine Péré-Vergé's expertise and passion are also being emulated in Pomerol's neighboring appellation, Lalande-de-Pomerol. Lalande-de-Pomerol boasts an extremely high-quality terroir. Château Moulin la Gravière is run with the same high standards of quality and attention to detail as in Pomerol, where Michel Rolland works wonders!
