Puligny Montrachet wine

Visit Puligny-Montrachet wine is an AOC of Côte de Beaunelocated in the Côte-d'Or department. Just a stone's throw from the Grands Crus of BurgundyThe village of Puligny-Montrachet lies between Meursault and Chassagne-Montrachet. Originally named Puligny, the village became Puligny-Montrachet in 1879. Several villages share the production of Puligny-Montrachet wine, either on the same level as Puligny, or slightly higher up on the Côte. Wines from this region of Burgundy may also be named Côtes de Beaune Villages. The only commune covered by the appellation is Puligny-Montrachet. It is also one of the very first white wine appellations in the Côte d'Or. The village owes its historic renown to the annual Saint-Vincent Tournante festival organized by local winegrowers.

The vines of Puligny-Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru often occupy brown limestone soils, or limestone alternating with marly clay-limestone whites, sometimes deep or right on the hard rock. The clayey silts are thicker in height, with fine grains lower down the slope. The vineyards of Puligny-Montrachet benefit from sunny, south-easterly exposure at altitudes of between 220 and 320 meters. The appellation is perfectly showcased by estates such as Domaine de Joseph Drouhin, Domaine d'Auvenay, Domaine Bouchard Père et Fils and Maison Louis Jadot.

Visit wines de Puligny-Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru share with Chassagne-Montrachet the most perfect expression of Chardonnay. Just a few yards from the Grands Crus, the appellation d'origine contrôlée instituted in 1937 produces a white wine with an assertive personality and a high reputation. The production of red wine is confidential, but this does not prevent it from being of the highest quality.

Grape varieties

Now an appellation, Puligny-Montrachet wines are mainly made from white wine. The grape variety used for Puligny-Montrachet white wine is chardonnaywhile the red wineproduced in the village of Blagny, is made from pinot noir. The area under white wine production is large: around 210 ha, of which 98 ha is 1er cru. In comparison, red wine production requires a smaller surface area: 0.76 ha, of which 0.05 ha is 1er cru. The four Puligny-Montrachet grands crus are : Chevalier-Montrachet, Welcome-bâtard-Montrachet, Montrachet and Bâtard-Montrachet.

Terroir and wine character

Near Blagny, the terroir is conducive to good red wine production. The wines produced are often full-bodied, fleshy, robust or bouqueted.

The Puligny-Montrachet wine has a robe d'orThe color is bright, shiny, with green highlights that yellow with age. White wine aromas include hawthorn, hazelnut, honey (when mature), almond, green apple, fern and lemongrass. Puligny-Montrachet also contains mineral notes. It's a smooth, harmonious wine. Its concentrated aromas linger long on the palate. Puligny-Montrachet red wine has a limpid ruby color that darkens with age, accompanied by red and black fruit aromas. On the palate, it's fruity, soft and well-constituted, with a tendency to become fleshy as it matures. Its color and taste will leave a lasting impression.

A sommelier's advice

Puligny-Montrachet white wine is best served between 11 and 13°c and red wine between 14 and 16°c. White wines can be kept for 8-10 years, red wines for 6-8 years.

Whether it's a Puligny-Montrachet 1er cru or climat, white wine goes perfectly with foie gras, lobster and crayfish, grilled fish and seafood, poultry in sauce (chicken with morel mushrooms, for example) and cheeses (goat's cheese, Reblochon or soft cheeses with a bloomy rind). Red wine, on the other hand, goes well with meats (pork, poultry, veal, etc.) and hard cheeses (such as Comté).
