Saint-Amour
Saint-Amour, located in the extreme north of the Beaujolais region, has its vineyards mainly in Saône-et-Loire. Officially recognized since the decree of February 8, 1946, the Saint-Amour AOC stands out. Spread over 310 hectares in the eponymous commune, the Saint-Amour appellation is characterized by its small size, comparable to that of Chénas among the Beaujolais crus. Facing east/southeast, the vineyards benefit from favorable granitic and siliceous-clay soils, with annual production approaching 17,500 hectoliters. Made exclusively from Gamay noir with white juice, Saint-Amour is divided into several climats, including "À la folie" and "En paradis", which are distinguished by their full-bodied, structured wines with fine aromas. Cuvées from Domaine Franck Juillard, Maison Trenel and Château Bonnet eloquently illustrate this exceptional terroir.

Origins of Saint-Amour red wine

Saint-Amour, an Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) red wine, has its roots in Saône-et-Loire, north of the Beaujolais region, consecrated by a decree dated February 8, 1946. This evocative appellation takes its name from a Roman legionary who converted to Christianity and founded a monastery in the region. Production takes place at altitudes ranging from 250 to 470 meters in the northern Beaujolais region, close to Burgundy. This location gives the vineyards a temperate climate and optimum sunshine, while protecting them from the vagaries of the weather thanks to their altitude. The drying effect of local winds helps protect against mildew. Covering more than 320 hectares, the soil is predominantly clay-silica and granitic, typical of Beaujolais wines.

Saint-Amour grape variety

Gamay noir à jus blanc is the only grape variety used for Saint-Amour, which is sensitive to spring frosts. This wine has a ruby-red color with purplish highlights, with some winemakers opting for short maceration to obtain lighter wines ready to be enjoyed more quickly. Saint-Amour is characterized by its soft, fruity character right from its youth, with notes of peach, red fruit and peony, evolving towards spicier aromas, such as kirsch, after two or three years. Over time, it gains in body and complexity, revealing a low tannin content and marked acidity. Over the years, Saint-Amour becomes richer, rounder, more powerful and charming.

Gastronomic pairings with Saint-Amour

Saint-Amour is an ideal accompaniment to game birds and red meats, and lends itself perfectly to family meals and festive celebrations. It also goes well with aperitifs and starters, often paired with dishes from its region of origin. This wine seduces on first tasting with its cherry, morello cherry and peony notes, promising a rich experience for the palate that refines with a little aeration.
