Château Montus
Alain Brumonthead of the Châteaux Montus and Château BouscasséHe made many changes and achieved what no one had done before him: choosing the best plots for each grape variety, replanting with the best grafts, doubling the number of vines per hectare to increase their potential tenfold, reducing yields and adapting fermentation to each grape variety. He was also the first in the appellation to age his wine in new barrels.
Visit Château Montus winesAlain Brumont, and the Brumont brand in general, are now considered to be an up-and-coming, original label with a future, thanks to its unique concept and style. With wines improving every year, Alain Brumont's aim is no longer to remain in the "club" of the 100 best winemakers, but to compete with the 20 or 30 best winemakers in the world.
A short history of Montus wines...
How are the estate's wines conceived?
The making of Montus wines is demanding. You have to be fussy, patient and rigorous to achieve the exceptional taste of these wines.A short history of Madiran...
Château Montus wines benefit from a great terroir. This area is unique in the South-West. It has a steep slope with large pebbles. The creation of this land, conducive to the development of the wines, took place in 1985. This wine is a real surprise. Indeed, the hierarchy of mythical red wines has been turned upside down. Many critics have dubbed this wine "the Pétrus of the South-West".Where does Montus wine come from?
Montus wine is made on steep slopes. These slopes are composed of rolled pebbles. The ideal exposure for these soils is South or even South-West. The terroirs are generally draining and warm. In this way, you can be sure that the vines will ripen well. Layered subsoil of brown and orange clays. Very low yields with 5-6 bunches per vine.Vinification and ageing of Montus wines
Maceration for this type of wine lasts a total of 3 to 6 weeks. This depends on the amount of sunshine in the soil and whether the grapes are more or less ripe. Fermentation must reach 28°C to be ideal. The tanks in which the grapes are placed for fermentation are made of wood. The wine is then aged on its lees for 12 to 14 months in 60-80% new barrels. What to serve Montus wine with?
This type of wine should be enjoyed by connoisseurs of all kinds. Fans of quality wines will be delighted. This wine is ideal with prime rib, rack of lamb, duck breast, game or spicy cuisine. It should be paired with dishes that have character, spiciness or a pronounced taste.Wine estates recommended by

92/100 Vinous
"The 2019 Château Montus shows the evolution of this property's style, displaying more density and seriousness without more extraction than its 2016 counterparts. It offers aromas of loamy soil, blueberries, blackberries, spice and pencil lead, followed by a round, enveloping and charming palate, with a layered fruit core and a long, velvety, penetrating finish. This blend of 80% Tannat and 20% Cabernet Franc highlights the roundness and fleshiness of the clay soils. A must-have for the next decade and beyond. (Wine Advocate 2024)

92/100 Vinous
"It reminds me of Graves - the combination of oak, malolactic fermentation and citrus. Full-bodied but not heavy, oaky but not chaotic. Complex and succulent, with long, persistent fruit on the finish. A real find! Certainly a little mysterious from the point of view of appellation and grape variety." (Jancis Robinson 2024)
Château Montus - Le Pinot Noir 2018
93/100 RVF
"The 2018 Pinot Noir exhibits a Burgundian profile at the foot of the Pyrenees: roundness, finesse and complexity, low PH and 40% whole harvest." (Le Guide RVF 2024). The latest addition to Château Montus, Le Pinot Noir 2018 has a rich, aromatic nose, with notes of red fruit mingling with the subtle aromas of barrel ageing. Full-bodied and well-balanced on the palate, with a fine, elegant structure and silky tannins. A wine in the image of its terroir!

90/100 RVF
"It's impressive how slowly Petit Courbu ages. Still rich in fruit, this wine is just beginning to ripen, bringing bitter almonds to broaden the fruit and acidity. The wine is now ready to drink. (Wine Enthusiast 2022). Enjoy with foie gras or Roquefort soufflé...

1*Étoile Hachette
"Dark tannins still envelop this rich wine. This dry core is accompanied by ripe fruit and a solid structure. This Madiran estate wine is designed for long aging. Drink now, but for best effect, wait until 2023. (Wine Enthusiast 2021). An atypical, generous character, a rich, opulent wine... A beautiful Madiran! Delivery in wooden cases for orders of 6 bottles of this wine (excluding Point Relais delivery).

2*Coup de Coeur Hachette
"The color is dense and deep. It heralds the intensity of the bouquet, inhabited by a noble woodiness inherited from twenty-four months in barrel, which mingles with ripe fruit on aeration. The palate attacks with suavity and greed, before revealing plenty of chewiness and consistency, as well as pleasant freshness. It's framed by solid tannins and controlled oak, which underpins the structure without overpowering the wine, and adds extra complexity. In short, a perfectly balanced Madiran, to be cellared for four or five years". (Le Guide Hachette des Vins 2015)
Château Montus - XL 1998
Produced only on the occasion of great vintages, this XL cuvée sees the best Tannats spend 40 months in barrel! A deep, rich wine, offering great complexity and concentration on the nose, a very elegant palate with a fresh, harmonious finish... A rare cuvée!
