Condrieu
It's Condrieu that recruited the famous bargemen who, from father to son, sailed between "Kingdom and Empire". Later, the coopers who made the barrels used in Côte-du-Rhône settled in Condrieu. In the 15th century Condrieu wine was the wine of choice for festive occasions and noble personalities. Nowadays, confidential moelleux wines reveal treasures of subtlety and aroma. Condrieu became a local AOC in 1940. The Condrieu appellation covers 7 communes, all on the right bank of the Rhône and straddling 3 départements: Rhône, Loire and Ardèche. The terroir covers steep granite slopes overlooking the river, making mechanization impossible. The climate is moderate continental, dry and hot in summer, with regular rainfall in other seasons. LCondrieu appellation has published a complete map of its vineyards, including the boundaries of the area and all the lieux-dits that make up the richness of this Côtes-du-Rhône cru. Within this terroir, M. Chapoutier, the Guigal house and the Georges Vernay and Delas Frères estates are to be singled out for the quality of their products. The area harvested is around 125 hectares, producing 4,400 hectolitres of wine annually, exclusively in white. The grape variety used is Viognier only. Vinification of Condrieu wines begins with light crushing and pressing, followed by ageing in oak barrels or vats before bottling in the famous yellow glass "Condrieu flute", now gradually being replaced by the classic bottle.

Condrieu wine

The Rhone Valley stretches from Vienne to Avignon, nearly 200 kilometers, with its vineyards and landscapes so typical of southern France. Here, curious and knowledgeable visitors can discover terraced or pebbled vineyards, set in warm, stony soils. The valley is proudly home to the wines of Côtes du Rhône, France's second largest regional appellation after Bordeaux, divided into two main geographical zones:

- Northern Côtes-du-Rhône, from Vienne to Valence;
 - The southern Côtes-du-Rhône, stretching from the south of the Drôme and Ardèche departments to Avignon and the surrounding region.
Just a stone's throw from Vienne lies Condrieu, a distinctive Côtes-du-Rhône wine. A white wine, it benefits from a unique terroir and optimal sunshine, giving it its unique fruity aromas.

Condrieu white wine: a Viognier

The Condrieu vineyard lies at the beginning of the Rhône valley, on the right bank of the river. Seven communes in the Loire, Rhône and Ardèche regions produce this wine: Condrieu, of course, but also Chavanay, Saint-Pierre-de-Boeuf, Saint-Michel-sur-Rhône, Vérin, Malleval and Limony. While the villages and vineyards in the southern Rhône Valley benefit from a Mediterranean climate, those in the north have a semi-continental climate. While the sun is at its strongest in summer, the harsher winter climate produces more delicate wines.

In Condrieu, no Syrah or Grenache. No intense, powerful red wines like Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Here, Viognier, the only authorized grape variety, reigns supreme. The climate and the sandy-clay, granite and limestone soils suit it perfectly. White Condrieu, part of the Vignobles et Découvertes label, is protected by two appellations:
- AOC, appellation d'origine contrôlée ;
- PDO, protected designation of origin.

Condrieu is a prestigious wine, nestled between two of the Rhône Valley's great names, Côte-Rôtie to the north and Saint-Joseph to the south. The appellation vin de Condrieu covers the no less renowned white wine appellation Château-Grillet. The vineyard, which produces only Viognier, is a rare wine, produced on a single estate.

Condrieu white wine: aromas and pairings

Condrieu wine, made from steep, terraced vines, has the color of the sun. Visually, the wine is already very rich, revealing the full palette of bright colors already evoking the Midi and its summery hues. The white wine, straw-colored or golden, has lovely colored reflections. Its color evokes the fruits of the Rhône Valley. The wine's fruity aromas and flavors are evident on tasting. The powerful nose reveals elegant peach and apricot aromas. Fresh fruit mingles delicately with a bouquet of more floral scents, the scent of violets adding delicate touches to that of honey and all the flowers that make it up. On the palate, the wine reveals all its richness and subtle sensations, blending acidity and roundness. Its richness of flavor makes it an expensive but exceptional white wine. Drinkable young and fresh, the wine is unctuous, heady and long-lasting. The appellation's recent switch to new oak and late harvest vinification brings a wider range of sensations. White wine and Viognier pair perfectly with Rhône Valley fish, crayfish, boudin blanc or fruit-based desserts such as apricot tart.

Condrieu wine, with its exceptional quality and impeccable reputation, is an undeniable addition to any gourmet meal. It underscores the richness of certain dishes or delicacies, such as foie gras or the finest cheeses. A small production area, a single grape variety, but a great wine.

"A superb evocation of the appellation".

"The elegance of its aromas of narcissus and stone fruit, and the greediness of its hint of nougatine, are what make this very delicate nose so seductive. After an attack of acidity, the roundness of the fruit takes over in a powerful, concentrated, almost creamy mouth, stretching into a long, suave finish with flavors of roasted apricot and roasted hazelnut. A superb evocation of the appellation, this wine is sure to delight at the table with veal sweetbreads or crayfish puff pastry for a long time to come". (Le Guide Hachette 2024)

"A Condrieu to be recommended in every way!

"Condrieu Vieilles Vignes 2023 is another tour de force from this producer. Stone fruits, roasted nuts, orange liqueur and crushed stones give this wine a slightly more mineral, masculine style. The medium- to full-bodied palate is concentrated, pure and structured, with great freshness and remarkable length, and a touch of salinity on the finish. It is destined for the table and should drink well through 2033." (Jeb Dunnuck 2024)

"The Condrieu de garde par excellence".

For this cuvée, only the estate's best and oldest Viognier vines, planted on granite terroirs, are blended. "The fabulous Condrieu La Doriane 2022 unfurls pronounced aromas of quince, apricot, vanilla, yellow apple, lemon peel and cedar. Hints of spring flowers and melon add further layers. Juicy and layered, this exceptional 2022 shows remarkable inner energy and balance. "An exceptional cuvee of density, balance and richness".

"A tiny 50-acre parcel in the heart of the appellation's historic vineyard: this Cœur de Roncharde has much more going for it than its pedigree. Starting with its beautiful golden glow and eloquent bouquet of acacia, dried apricot, hazelnut butter and gunflint. This superb complexity is also evident on the supple, unctuous palate, lined with melted oak calibrated to measure, and ending with a smoky, mineral touch. To be reserved for noble fish". "A dazzling success!

"Grapes from three separate parcels were fermented and then aged for 10 months in 600 l demi-muids before blending. In the glass, this Condrieu delivers an initially discreet olfactory bouquet of acacia flower and hazelnut butter, nuanced with aeration by an elegant touch of gunflint. Lively, ample and long, the palate displays impeccable freshness, reinforced by a saline finish. Delicate, a little austere, this cuvée will blossom after a little cellaring". "Sublime!"

A very fine Condrieu, combining density and elegance. The nose is floral and slightly spicy, with aromas of quince, lychee and vanilla. The palate is pure, sapid and long-lasting, with notes of violet, almond and white flower. Balanced freshness on a long finish ending with tannins suggestive of green tea.
