Juliénas
Juliénas, a tasty Beaujolais appellation d'origine contrôlée wine
Juliénas' vocation as a winegrower dates back to the earliest times. Juliénas Juliénas was named after Julius Caesar, and vines have been cultivated since the Gallo-Roman period. Juliénas is likely to be one of the earliest centers of vine-growing in the Beaujolais region.A region with a rich history and specific geographical features
AOC since 1938, and benefiting from the European PDO label, the vineyards of Juliénas is located in the extreme north of the department of Rhôneon the border of the Saône-et-Loire region and the Mâconnais vineyards. The appellation covers 620 hectares, divided between the commune of Juliénas and the communes of Jullie, Emeringes and Pruzilly. Almost the entire vineyard enjoys a very favorable southeast/south exposure. Juliénas lies in a valley well sheltered from north and west winds. The resulting micro-climate and the altitude of the vines, which range from 230 m to 430 m, provide ideal conditions for good grape ripening. The appellation is divided between granitic soils to the west and sedimentary soils to the east (ancient alluvium).Beaujolais grape varieties and winemaking techniques create a unique wine
Visit Juliénas wine As in all Beaujolais, Juliénas is made exclusively from Gamay noir with white juice. The Juliénas Gamay grape results in wines with fruity tendencies, reminiscent of red fruit notes such as redcurrant or raspberry, or certain black fruits such as blackcurrant. In the bottle, this translates into a red color with a multitude of purple and violet hues. This grape variety, also known as Gamay Noir à Jus Blanc, produces small bunches that are rather tricky to grow, but blend harmoniously with the granite soil found in the Juliénas terroir. These wines also have a relatively high alcohol content, with a robust, powerful character that will complement a wide variety of dishes and meals. Vatting time varies from 6 to 10 days, depending on the characteristics of the harvest (year, millerandage, age of vines, etc.). The Juliénas winesand richly coloured, they are among the best vintages of the Beaujolais of good guard. The Vignobles Laurent Perrachonthe Maison Trenel and the Coquard House offer excellent examples of the best that the appellation can produce.More information on the Juliénas

Laurent Perrachon - Juliénas Les Vignes Centenaires 2022
3.2/5 (5 reviews)
91/100 Wine Enthusiast
This parcel of less than 1 hectare of century-old vines on the slopes of La Bottière offers a wine of impressive ripeness and unctuous texture. Carefully aged in wood, it has intensity, richness and structure.
Château de Pougelon - Juliénas Beauvernay 2022
3*Coup de Coeur Hachette
"On the vineyard side, 65-year-old Gamays planted on a steep slope with bluestone soil (a combination of schist and diorite). On the cellar side, the wine is vinified in whole bunches and aged for 15 months in concrete vats. The estate's ambitious choices are rewarded here with a superb, remarkably harmonious Julienas. The aromatic palette is highly complex, combining peony, cherry, licorice and spices. On the palate, the tannins are elegant and silky, asserting themselves with distinction as the tasting progresses, accompanied by a lovely freshness with mineral tones". (Le Guide Hachette 2025)

90/100 RVF
This jewel in the Dubœuf galaxy represents a fine standard-bearer for the cru. Faithful to the muscle of the Capitans, it reveals a fine quality of fruit, thanks in particular to complete destemming. Its precise tannin and judicious ageing promise good cellaring potential (LA RVF n°682 July - August 2024).

"Intense notes of bay, clove and savory, along with deep black cherry and elderberry, make this a unique Julienas. Concentrated, yet very fresh, it has lively acidity and chocolatey tannins that build steadily to a long, compact finish. A cuvée from the Les Chers, Les Crots and Les Capitains terroirs. A wine for laying down. To drink or to keep. (James Suckling 2022).

"From a steep, south-facing vineyard planted with 70-year-old vines, this rich wine has great potential. The tannins support the black fruit and acidity. The wine will be best from 2022 onwards." (Wine Enthusiast 2021) Reflecting its blue rock-rich terroir, Les Mouilles features a mineral profile, with a powerful, structured palate. A beautiful personality.

1*Étoile Hachette
"The 60-year-old vines produced just 25 hl/ha in 2019 to produce this fine Juliénas with rich aromas of black fruits, cocoa; fleshy, coated palate, with substance." (Bourgogne Aujourd'hui n°158 - April-May 2021). A choice vintage in Burgundian style not to be missed. A revelation for this young winemaker whose 1st vintage 2017 was already 2** Favorite Guide Hachette!
Domaine Châtaignier Durand - Juliénas Vieilles Vignes 2014
3.4/5 (34 reviews)
2*Coup de Coeur Hachette
"Already noted in the 2013 vintage, this cuvée born of sixty-year-old vines delivers a devilishly seductive nose, both fine and powerful, of ripe Morello cherry underscored by a hint of kirsch. Equally pleasing, the full, rich, fat palate unfurls fine, smooth tannins, tautened by a freshness that exalts the fruit and lends length to the finish. A lasting pleasure". (Le Guide Hachette des Vins 2016)

88/100 Robert Parker
"The 2013 Juliénas (Château de la Bottière) comes from a 3.75-hectare parcel. It has a more discreet nose than the Domaine des Mouilles cuvée, with earthy accents and small black fruits, enhanced by an iodized flavor. The palate is medium-bodied, with mellow tannins, good volume, fine structure and a blackcurrant finish. Drink now through 2018. (Wine Advocate - Robert Parker)
Domaine de la Conseillère - Juliénas 2011

89/100 Robert Parker
"The third vintage from this seven-hectare estate, the Vincent du Château Fuissé have produced a Juliénas 2011 that blends juicy raspberry notes with a hint of rose. Satisfying and refreshing on the palate, it compensates for its relative simplicity with undeniable charm, with a lovely salinity on the finish that makes it salivating, long and slightly bittersweet. Judging by my experience with other, more upmarket wines in the appellation, it will enjoy very well, right through to 2016." (Wine Advocate - Robert Parker)
Château de la Bottière - Juliénas Cuvée Vieilles Vignes 2010
3.9/5 (14 reviews)
1*Étoile Hachette
"A cuvée from century-old vines, distinguished for its elegance. The nose is reminiscent of fresh, candied cherries; the palate is fleshy, full-bodied and rich, ending with spicy tannins. The wood ageing (twelve months in barrel, then three months in cask) is barely noticeable, and the tannins remain supple. A complete wine, to be enjoyed from 2013". (Le Guide Hachette des Vins)
Domaine des Mouilles - Juliénas 2012
4.5/5 (2 reviews)
Note : Guide Hachette 1*(Very successful wine)
"When aired, this Julienas offers a nose of red and black fruits (elderberry, blackcurrant). On the palate, it appears fat and solid. Its tannins, still a little severe, need one or two years of cellaring to soften. (Le Guide Hachette des Vins 2014). A supple wine, with a fine texture and a pleasantly fresh finish...
Maison Coquard - Juliénas 2011
3.4/5 (14 reviews)
Notes : Le Guide des Meilleurs Vins à Petits Prix (RVF) 15,5/20, Concours des Vins de Lyon Grand Or, Guide Hachette 1* (Very successful wine),
"With this wine, we find ourselves in the pulpy, sensual flesh of the bigarreau, where the full-bodied finish of the cru's granite base breathes. It's frank and very typical of Juliénas". (Le Guide des Meilleurs Vins à Petits Prix 2013 - Guide Rouge RVF). A Juliénas that's great to drink young, with its black fruit and floral aromas, and that will improve with one or two years of cellaring. Enjoy with coq au vin!
